You see, Matthew McConaughey is the unofficial Minister of Culture for the University of Texas, his alma mater. He also is a professor at the university, so school pride is a special sort of category for McConaughey.
On Monday, the movie and TV star blasted out his own version of a Longhorn football hype video. It’s a fast-paced clip of Matthew McConaughey doing minister of culture type things. He captioned it: “Let’s go to work.”
There’s also a narration with the clip. Someone asks him about being the minister of culture. And McConaughey responded:
“Thank you for asking. As the minister of culture I want to champion certain guided principles. The soul of Austin, the soul of the University of Texas.”
Matthew McConaughey Moved Family to Austin. He’s Everywhere at UT Events
Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, are raising their three young children in Austin. He still acts, but McConaughey also leans on his other talents. He’s a professor at the UT’s Moody College of Communication, teaching a script-to-screen class each semester.
And McConaughey is super involved with Longhorn sports. If you watch his hype video, you can see his passion. That’s not fake. If you’re at any big game in Austin, McConaughey likely is on the sideline or in his suite.
A lot of the clip features video from a ESPN GameDay show in 2019, when Matthew McConaughey was the celebrity picker. Later that night, Texas played host to eventual national champion LSU. For the early morning show, he made a grand entrance. McConaughey drove a burnt orange 1978 Ford T-Bird convertible with longhorns on the hood. And Foghat’s Slow Ride was blaring from the speakers. It was as if Wooderson from Dazed and Confused was rolling on up to the set.
For special events, Matthew McConaughey pulls out his three-piece burnt orange suit.
Actor is Gearing Up for Football Season
But the most special event is about to hit Austin. That’s the kickoff of football season. Texas plays host to Louisiana in its season opener at Royal-Memorial Stadium, Sept. 4. The Longhorns sport a new coach in Steve Sarkisian and will be swapping conferences, possibly as early as next season.
But Matthew McConaughey is more than just a burnt orange suit. He also is a sports owner of a team that has nothing to do with the Longhorns.
McConaughey is a minority owner in Austin F.C., the new MLS franchise in Austin. He’s got a special green suit to wear to those games. In the home opener, McConaughey also brought his drum. It was part of his hype performance to get the boisterous soccer fans to scream even louder.
