In 1989, Pat Sajak dialed back his responsibilities with Wheel of Fortune to pursue his own talk show. The show he organized was called The Pat Sajak Show. It was much like other late-night talk shows. He invited a bunch of A-list celebrities to join him to talk about everything about their lives.
In truth, it was a decent show. There was a lot of other competition at that time, which is probably why it only lasted for a year and a half. Nonetheless, it satisfied Pat Sajak’s urge to test out a late-night talk show enough. Afterward, he returned as the full-time host of the iconic game show.
One episode, in particular, of the show stands out. The Wheel of Fortune host had Jim Henson on his show. During their brief time together, the two had a hilarious conversation. Kermit the Frog made a bold appearance on the show.
Kermit told Sajak about how he was also working on a few shows at the moment.
“I’ve been working on a few [shows]. We’ve got ‘My Three Frogs,’ ‘Married with Tadpoles,’ ‘Quantum LeapFrog,’ and then we’ve got ‘The Frogsby Show.'”
Sajak laughs as he hears the ridiculous shows that are being put together by Kermit.
“Anyways, it sounds like you’ve got a lot of great ideas. How’s Ms. Piggy doing, by the way?”
A Back and Forth Between the “Wheel of Fortune” Host and Kermit the Frog
Kermit informs Sajak that she’s fine but then looks worried when the host said that he saw her the other day.
Sajak says, “She told me what happened.” But, Kermit doesn’t know what he’s referring to. Sajak just says that he is “taking it all very well.”
Kermit insists that Sajak explain what he is talking about. However, the Wheel of Fortune host doesn’t want to say anything bad on national television.
“You can’t talk about what on TV,” Kermit says, obviously stressed. Finally, Sajak says that Ms. Piggy dumped him. The frog shudders and lets out a gasp. Kermit tries to explain that there was never a relationship between them to be dumped from.
The two have an excellent back and forth about starting over. Kermit wants to start over again, but Sajak tells him he already has a girlfriend. The crowd loves the banter between them.
Instead, Kermit asks the talk show host to roll the clip for his next thing. But, he doesn’t know how to describe the clip the audience is about to watch—the frog is too flustered. Finally, Kermit explains to Sajak that the clip is about Ms. Piggy.
After the clip rolls, Henson explains what inspired him to create Kermit. Their conversation is a great look into the minds behind Kermit the Frog and the rest of The Muppet Show.
