Who would have ever known that longtime Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak also doubles as an expert on all things owls? Not us.
Wherever you live, there is probably a good chance you can spot an owl nearby. At least Wheel of Fortune letter-turner and co-hostess Vanna White can. After the conclusion of Friday’s episode of Wheel of Fortune, Sajak and White engage in a hilarious discussion about the owl that lives in Vanna’s neighborhood.
“No matter what the puzzle there’s something having to do with you,” Sajak says to White. “You have an owl, don’t you?”
“Well I don’t have one,” she replies.
“You don’t own an owl?” he says back.
“No, there’s one in my neighborhood that has been around for years and years,” she explains.
“And he goes in your chimney?”
“He goes on top of the chimney, and I hear him hooting,” White continues. “Yeah, I wonder how long they live?”
That’s when the Wheel of Fortune host took the chance to show off his knowledge about the species.
“About 32 and a half years,” Sajak states.
However, while Sajak isn’t that far off, the Owl Research Institute estimates that the average life span for most species of owls is probably lower than 32 years. Generally, the larger species of owls live longer than the smaller ones. And, of course, the ones who have their three basic needs met — food, somewhere safe to roost, and a place to nest — tend to live longer as well.
“Oh my goodness,” White says. “He’s going to be around for a while.”
“Yes he is. Yes, yes, that’s right,” Sajak says to end the hilarious back and forth.

Wheel of Fortune Host Pat Sajak and Family Mourn the Loss of Their Dog
Sticking with the theme of Wheel of Fortune and animals, it only makes sense to touch on a piece of heartbreaking news. Pat Sajak announced on the June 8th episode of the popular show that their beloved 12-year-old dog, Stella, had crossed the rainbow bridge.
“You and I have a lot in common,” Sajak said to Vanna White. “We both have two kids, we both have the same unusual blood type. But the weirdest of all is, we independently, without either one knowing it, named our pets the same name. Your cat is named Stella, and we had a dog named Stella for 12 years. And I used the past tense because we recently had to say goodbye to Stella. It was a very sad time for the Sajak family. We’re gonna miss her, she was a good friend.”
Yesterday, Sajak’s daughter Maggie posted her own tribute to Stella in a heartfelt Instagram story.
“Oh, how I miss this girl with my whole entire heart.”
