Maggie Sajak Discusses Her Time on the Wheel of Fortune Stage While Pat Was on Leave
During an interview with ABC News correspondent Paula Farris in 2020, Maggie Sajak discussed filling in for Vanna White as the show’s famous letter-turner in 2019. White was taking over hosting duties for Maggie’s dad, Pat Sajak, who at the time was recovering from surgery for blocked intestine. She described the situation as being bittersweet. “Because obviously, the circumstances, you know, was that my dad couldn’t be there.”
Maggie reveals that White came over to the Sajak’s house the night before Wheel of Fortune was being taped and used their fridge for practice. Maggie described the position as being more complicated. “Like I said, with [Pat’s] job, they make it look easy, after all these years. And they’re so great at their jobs.”
Maggie also describes the Wheel of Fortune star as not a big complainer as he recovers. “I could tell he was taking [his health seriously,” she states. Pat chimes in and reveals that Maggie was a big help in his recovery. “To this day, I don’t think I’m allowed to pick up anything heavier than a pillow.”
Maggie notably made her Wheel of Fortune debut in 1996 when she was an infant. The clip of her first appearance aired at the end of her first episode as letter turner. In regards to when she thinks her father will retire from the game show, Maggie says she knows that he wants to be able to leave on his terms. “No matter what he decides to do, I know he has such a lasting legacy on the show.”
Pat returned to the Wheel of Fortune stage following his recovery and has remained healthy even during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been the host of Wheel of Fortune since 1981. In September of 2020, Sajak became the longest-running host of any game show.
