In a 2013 interview, “Wheel of Fortune”s irreplaceable Vanna White spoke of her audition for the long-running show, and how she felt far from “irreplaceable” at the start.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else championing the famous “Wheel of Fortune” board. Back in 1982, however, she was but one of many young women auditioning to become the game show’s “letter turner.”

Now, some four decades on and still as mesmerizing as ever, Vanna (who shares the rare one-name notoriety, like Madonna, that few others will ever gain) no longer turns letters – but touches them into existence as part of the digital age.

Even after all this time, Vanna still recalls those 1982 auditions with remarkable clarity. Speaking to The Columbian in 2013, the star reveals she was far from confident in her ability to nab “Wheel of Fortune”s coveted co-hosting role.

“I didn’t think I had a chance,” Vanna told the trade. “The girl I was competing against was the complete opposite of me: poised and brunette and perfect…”

Yet Vanna won out over hundreds of other hopefuls. And there’s been no stopping her since. Still, White still remembers that she “felt like I was just this girl from North Myrtle Beach that was … I don’t know…”

At the time, White says she “had no confidence,” something that has absolutely changed in the years since.

‘Wheel of Fortune’s Vanna White & Pat Sajak Have ‘Never Had One Argument’ in 4 Decades

Speaking to her audition much more recently in 2020, Vanna recalls she was “so nervous” during the entire process to E!’s Daily Pop.

“I wanted the job so badly and I didn’t think I had any chance of getting it,” she continues. There was no way for her to know at the time, however, that the job would come with such “incredible job security.”

“I remember sitting in the makeup chair next to Pat [Sajak] and saying, ‘I wonder where we’ll be in ten years?’ And It’s been 38,” White adds.

What a remarkable journey – and Vanna considers it one of the loves of her life. Co-hosting “Wheel of Fortune” and her dear friendship with Pat Sajak, that is.

“We’ve never had one argument,” she reveals to E!. “And I think we just have the same personality… We’re easy-going, we’re laid back. So, it’s just worked all these years.”

Viewers certainly agree with that sentiment. Indeed, “Wheel of Fortune” wouldn’t be the same without Vanna. Here’s to many more decades of Vanna White to come!
