“One hell of a run, Dave ❤️,” Wolf Van Halen wrote on Instagram. He also shared on Twitter, “Thankful and proud to be a small part of your amazing journey.” Both posts had a sweet snapshot of him and David Lee Roth.
As previously reported, Roth announced his retirement during a recent interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I’m throwing in the shoes. I’m retiring. This is the first, and only, official announcement. You’ve got the news. Share it with the world.”
Roth then added that he wasn’t going to explain the statement. “The explanation is in a safe. These are my last five shows.”
David Lee Roth was the lead singer of Van Halen from 1974 to 1985. He returned in 1996 and again from 2006 until the band’s disbandment in 2020.
Wolf Van Halen Recalls the Prank He Pulled on David Lee Roth
During a November 2020 interview with Spin, Wolf Van Halen revealed he actually pulled a prank on David Lee Roth during the Hollywood Bowl in October 2015. “Throughout the whole tour, Dave had an issue whenever someone in the audience had a beach ball,” Van Halen explained. “Every time he saw them, it would really upset him for some reason.”
Wolf Van Halen also recalled that every time Roth saw beach balls, eh would stop singing and then stand at the front of the stage. “[He would] say, ‘Throw the beach ball up here.’ Eight times until it eventually got up and he would stamp it out. Then he’d throw it off the stage.”
During the last show, Wolf Van Halen said that the tour manager approached him and his father about a funny little surprise during the show. “He goes, ‘At the very end of Jump when you’re doing the ride out, we’re going to release 50 beach balls from the top of the audience. And we’ll just see what happens.’ But even if he gets pissed off, what was he gonna do? It’s the last f—ing show.”
Wolf Van Halen then revealed that when the avalanche of beach balls happened, David Lee Roth was apparently “short-circuiting.” He said, “[Dave] didn’t understand how to handle it But we all laughed it off. And it was just a really fun, almost like a fun practical joke. And yeah, that was a really fun memory of that show.”
Wolf Van Halen went on to add that the joke was exactly how his late father would have wanted it.
