WWE star and actor John Cena opens up about how he used to be homeless before making it big in the wrestling world.

John Cena may be known for the countless memes and the movie appearances, but prior to all that, Cena was homeless and sleeping in his car. He is also one of five brothers from Massachusetts.

Even though now, John Cena is generally considered one of the best professional wrestlers of all time, you have to start somewhere. As we said, Cena began in his car. According to an interview with The Sun, the 6’1″ 44-year-old wrestler said there was a silver lining.

“I slept in my car for a while, which happened to be a very roomy 1991 Lincoln Town Car,” Cena said. “I had my clothes in the trunk, and I slept in the back seat.”

John Cena said that a gym employed him, however, he still didn’t have the necessary money needed to cover the bill involved with a place of his own. However, he did keep a relatively easy schedule to follow.

“I’d wake up, use the locker rooms and the shower and repeat the process all over again,” he added.

The “Blockers” star first packed his bags and drove to Los Angeles in 1999. Unfortunately, Cena’s father didn’t support his son’s far-fetched dreams and said he would fail. Boy, did he prove him wrong. Although, after getting off to a rocky start, the last thing he wanted to do was go home and confirm his father’s claims.

“Dad told me I would be home with my tail between my legs in two weeks,” Cena told the outlet. “Sure enough, I went through my resources quickly and had to think on my feet. I didn’t want to go home crying.”

John Cena’s Rise to Fame

He worked hard, and in 2001, he signed a contract to work at Ohio Valley Wrestling. According to Biography, by February 2002, John Cena claimed the OVW heavyweight title. This catapulted his fame to the WWE level. He began competing at the level that June.

He won countless big-name fights, but in 2005 John Cena debuted his short-lived rap career. His album, You Can’t See Me, did surprisingly well with audiences, as it reached 15 on the Billboard 200 charts.

His next venture came in 2015 when John Cena appeared alongside Amy Schumer in the hit comedy Trainwreck. Cena received critical praise for the role of Schumer’s masculine yet sensitive boyfriend.

“I got my chance to throw my sense of humor out into the world, and at the same time play this hulky guy who’s a softy, which in real life I’m a very emotional guy,” Cena told Business Insider.

John Cena has appeared in other films, and his Hollywood success is enough to rub in any disapproving father’s face. According to Parade, Cena’s net worth is currently estimated to be near $60 million.
