It seems like Those Who Wish Me Dead got their wish, as the new movie from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan didn’t perform as well as expectations at the box office.

The action-thriller starring Angelina Jolie only pulled in $2.8 million last weekend. Spiral, the latest gore-core horror movie in the Saw franchise, took the top spot, Variety said.

Those Who Wish Me Dead follows Jolie as a forest firefighter that tries to protect a young boy who’s on the run from assassins. They must escape the killers and outrun a forest fire as it consumes the world around them. Sheridan directed the movie. He is also one of the three screenwriters on the film based on a book by the same name.

Part of the problem may have been that Warner Bros released the film concurrently on HBO Max as well as in theaters. Meaning people could watch it at home. However, Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat, which also had similar concurrent releases performed well at the box office.

Over the past year, the pandemic brought a screeching halt to moviegoing at the theatres. However, upon the release of Those Who Wish Me Dead, 65 percent of U.S. theaters are open. The movie reportedly played at 3,188 cinemas.

Ironically, the problem may be that audiences had too many options for this type of film, box office experts theorized.

“The film was barely promoted even by pandemic standards and effectively went under the radar as both as a theatrical and streaming release,” Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst at Box Office Pro, told Variety. “We’ve seen a number of genre thrillers aimed at audiences of a certain age open during the past year, so there could also be an element of saturation in play.”

Studio officials didn’t release any data on how many people watched the film on HBO Max.

This is Taylor Sheridan’s first film since Wind River in 2017. Since then, he’s been hard at work on the wildly popular Yellowstone, the most-watched cable show of 2020, and now its many subsequent spin-offs.

Taylor Sheridan Has Several Shows in the Works

The Yellowstone creator is one of the hottest show creators working at the moment. He recently signed a mammoth nine-figure deal with ViacomCBS to make shows for their platforms, The Hollywood Reporter said.

One of the first is a Yellowstone prequel called Y:1883. It follows the Dutton family as they head West seeking a richer life in Montana. He also has another Yellowstone spinoff called 6666, which will take us to Texas to the legendary horse and livestock ranch. Earlier this month, it was announced Sheridan is in talks to buy the famed 6666 ranch. It is one of the biggest in the United States at 266,255 acres — about 416 square miles.

Executives have also greenlit two more Sheridan projects, the prison thriller Mayor of Kingstown and the Land Man, which Taylor said will focus on “the oil boom and bust of West Texas. It really focuses on greed. The very best and the very worst of man, of humanity. And that is a story worth telling and exploring.”
