The “Yellowstone” Season 3 finale delivered several major cliffhangers, but none bigger than when John Dutton was shot by an unidentified gunman. Fans of the Paramount Series have theories on the shooter and it may not be who you expect.
In this year’s final Yellowstone episode, titled “The World is Purple,” John Dutton (Kevin Costner) pulls over to help a mother and her son with a flat tire. While changing the tire a van pulls up beside them. The people in the van ask his identity, to which John confirms that he is, in fact, John Dutton. Thereafter, a door to the van flies open and they open fire on John. But the question remains: who tried to kill John?
Fans of the series are sharing all types of theories on social media about the identity of the killer. One wild theory suspects that Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) tried to take out, John Dutton.
This theory comes out of left field as the two have been strong allies. In the Season 3 Finale, the tribal leader learns that he will never truly get the ranch lands back for his people. However, he may be able to change that if he kills John.
Furthermore, Thomas Rainwater seems to be one of the most honorable characters on Yellowstone. Watching him take a turn into an attempted murderer might be the exact type of misdirection that fans have come to expect from the show.
In addition to fans suspecting Thomas Rainwater, fans have several other popular theories. After learning his true history, many viewers think Jamie may be behind the hit. Over the last few episodes of the season, Jamie bonded with his birth father, Garrett (Will Patton). Jamie learns that Garrett killed his birth mother.
Garrett possibly could have been the one to influence Jamie to have his adopted father murdered. After all, “Yellowstone ain’t a ranch, it’s an empire and empire’s you take.”
