“Yellowstone” fans have some time to go before they’ll see the Dutton clan back on the screen. Maybe the Netflix show “Longmire” can help pass the time.

As of right now, the estimated return date for the popular drama is June 2021. This means there are still months before fans find out what happens next.

Rather than going stir-crazy waiting, some “Yellowstone” fans on Reddit recommended watching the TV series “Longmire” to help pass the time.

In a post, one user said, “While we all wait for Season 4 to show up, I humbly suggest spending some time with Walt Longmire. I’ve been bingeing this show for the past few days and it’s worth the watch. Lots of Yellowstone similarities.”

Other people in the comment section eagerly agreed. Some even said they’ve watched the show a couple of times from beginning to end.

So what is “Longmire” all about and how is it similar to the television favorite, “Yellowstone?”

What is ‘Longmire?’

“Longmire” is a modern Western crime drama. It was on the A&E network and was developed by John Coveny and Hunt Baldwin.

The show follows the main character, Walt Longmire. He is a sheriff in the fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming. Here he investigates crimes in the area that fall under his particular jurisdiction.

He also works closely with his friend Henry Standing Bear. Standing Bear is a Cheyenne man who helps by providing aid to the tribal police in the area. The show features a lot of contemporary Native American issues. “Longmire” is similar to “Yellowstone” in that it includes the voices and issues that contemporary Indigenous individuals deal with.

Walt is also joined by his daughter Cady on many of the crimes. Walt was married before but finds out more secrets dealing with his wife’s death throughout the show.

When it was first on in 2012 it was the highest-rated original drama series. The show was not renewed in 2014 by A&E. However, Netflix picked the show up and continued where it left off on season four. Netflix would go on to also make seasons five and six before also canceling the show in 2017.

While the show is no longer creating new episodes, fans can stream it on Netflix. The show is interesting in that it has smaller, episode-by-episode plotlines as well as overarching storylines.

According to The New York Times, Netflix subscribers watched 190 million hours of “Longmire” in 2020. It seems like a lot of people discovered just how addicting the Western can be.

The Cast of the Show

“Longmire” has a recognizable cast, similar to a lot of the stars on “Yellowstone.”

Robert Taylor, who plays Sheriff Walt Longmire, has appeared in a number of movies since 2017. He was in “The Meg,” “Into the Ashes,” and “Blood Vessel.” He also was in an episode of “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings.”

His friend on the show, Henry Standing Bear, is played by Lou Diamond Phillips. He has been in a number of other crime shows like “Goliath,” “Blindspot,” “Blue Bloods,” “Criminal Minds,” and “NCIS: New Orleans.” He’s also done voiceover work on “Elena of Avalor” and “The Lion Guard.”

Katee Sackhoff, who plays Victoria Moretti on the show, has appeared in “The Flash” and did voice work for “Robot Chicken” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” She is also in the popular show, “The Mandalorian.”

Despite its cancellation, “Longmire” has remained popular. Now a whole new wave of “Yellowstone” fans may be rushing over to watch the crime-drama Western.
