“I guess when you make a million dollars, you feel like you want to tell somebody.” ‘Yellowstone’ icon Kevin Costner once spilled the beans on what it was like to make his first $1 million, and it’s a must-read for any fan of the legendary actor.
At the time of ‘Man of Steel’s release in 2014, Kevin Costner was working his way into the hearts of a whole new generation of fans as Superman’s father, Jonathan Kent. During the film’s press tour, the future ‘Yellowstone’ star gave a fascinatingly personal interview with HuffPost. Within, the actor touches on everything from the failure of ‘Waterworld” to the opposite: making his first $1 million in cold, hard cash.
In the words of the man himself, “I guess when you make a million dollars, you feel like you want to tell somebody.” The further he recounts his first $1M payday, however, the more humble it becomes.
“And, you know, it’s kind of gross with the background that you don’t ask a person what they make or how much they got paid for it,” Costner continues to the trade. “But, you know [laughs], you make a million dollars and you kind of go, “Holy sh*t!”
“I would imagine,” HuffPost’s awestruck interviewer, Mike Ryan, responds.
“And it’s like, I guess, does that define it? No. But you kind of went, “God, I’m able to do this. I’m able to really do this,” Costner adds.
‘Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner: “I was able to tell my parents, ‘Your son, the f*ck up, finally did it”
As for the film that made him this first million? Costner’s not shy about that, either.
“The Untouchables,” I remember I got that [amount] for the first time. And I remember they were only going to pay me $800,000 — I say “only,” that’s not “only,” they’re going to spend $800,000,” he revealed.
The ‘Yellowstone’ star detailed that, before ‘The Untouchables,’ which hit in 1997, he made $750,000 for ‘No Way Out’ just before. And when it came time to negotiate for ‘Untouchables,’ “they said they’d offer me $800,000. And I said, “It’s got to be a million.” And they said, “We can’t do it.” And I said, “Yes, you can.”
What a line! Turns out there’s just as much of Kevin Costner in ‘Yellowstone’s John Dutton as we all thought. To this end, the icon says he “got the remaining $200,000 deferred at the point the movie came out, so I got to my million.”
The best part for Costner, however, had nothing to do with the million itself. And everything to do with his parents being proud.
“I was able to tell my parents, “Your son, the f–k up, finally did it. It worked out OK,” he concluded the subject.
What a legend. Kevin Costner and his million-dollar attitude will return for ‘Yellowstone’ Season 4 come Summer 2021.
