Yellowstone: Wes Bentley Speaks out on Fans’ Comparisons To Game Of Thrones

Paramount’s Yellowstone left fans’ jaws dropped after its riveting season 3 finale. After the shock settled, many viewers couldn’t help but to draw comparisons to another popular, action-packed show: Game of Thrones.

To summarize many fans feelings, Clint Chelf, former Oklahoma State quarterback, put it simply. Following the finale that shocked over 5 million live viewers, he drew the comparison between the two hit shows. He says, “Yellowstone went full Game of Thrones.”

Wes Bentley On Game Of Thrones & Fan Theories

In fact, Wes Bentley, who plays Jamie in Yellowstone, has admitted he is a Game of Thrones fan. He mentioned in an interview with Entertainment Weekly the connection between the two shows. He says he empathizes the fans urge to share theories. He says he had the same feeling of curiosity during GOT. “I mean, I was a Game of Thrones fan, so I had my own theories,” he tells EW.

He goes on to say he understands the parallels that have been drawn between the to hit shows, as well. “Yes, there definitely is [a connection],” Bentley tells Entertainment Weekly. “The way the family dynamic works and the goals that kind of all fit together in some weird ways.”

GOT Connections Prior to Season 3

Yellowstone’s co-creator and writer Taylor Sheridan has also mentioned similarities. In an interview with Deadline prior to season three, Sheridan give Game of Thrones as an example to explain depth of character development and plot growth. “I’ll give a Game of Thrones example. Once we understand all the players and what they want, then we understand the threat that’s really coming and the hero we think is coming,” he explains. Continuing, explaining the situation the show was in before the third season began, “Well now we can slow the world way down and look at what makes these people tick and keep putting them in situations that will show their true colors.” He explains similar to Game of Thrones, “it’s about figuring out who’s who,” which sometimes means that person’s motives and passions are completely different than you original believe.

Cole Houser, who plays Rip, posted an Instagram as fans geared up for season three. He alluded to Game of Thrones in the caption, saying “Winter is coming.”

Game Of Thrones Gives Yellowstone Fans Hope For Characters’ Future

Not only have fans found shocking similarities in family dynamics and plot, but they also have decided the outcome for many characters in the medieval show might mean some of their Yellowstone favorites are safe.

In a Reddit discussing the season three finale, one user brings up the fate of many Game of Thrones main characters. CinemaBlend referencing the user who reasons, “They all will survive — if Game of Thrones taught me anything, it’s that it is easy to kill main characters. If you want them dead from a writing standpoint, you don’t do it in the last five minutes.” They are, of course, referencing Jon Snow’s fate in the fifth season finale and continued storyline in the sixth season of Game of Thrones. With this logic, they explain Yellowstone may leave a cliff hanger ending, but there is no way the fan favorites are completely killed off.

Another Reddit user said simply, “So… is this just becoming a Western version of Game of Thrones?”

Seems only time (and season four) will tell. Season 4 of Yellowstone is expected to hit televisions late June 2021.
