ZZ Top Cancels Concert Stop After ‘Health Issue’ With Band Member

Rock band ZZ Top put the brakes on their North America tour after one of their band members experienced unknown health issues.

The group was supposed to stop in Evansville, Indiana, on Wed. July 21. The concert for their “A Celebration of ZZ Top” tour should’ve taken place at the Ford Center. But according to local news outlet “Evansville Courier & Press,” they canceled the show because of a “health issue within the band.”

Scott Schoenike, the venue’s general manager, did share that the Ford Center show “was selling really well.” He also confirmed that tickets would be refunded, though he’s not sure if ZZ Top will stop by Evansville again for a rescheduled show.

No one has shared whether the band will continue with their show in Goshen, Indiana on Saturday, July 24. Tickets are already sold out for the event at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.

ZZ Top announced the tour just last month and started off less than a week ago in Manchester, Iowa. They scheduled shows all throughout the U.S. until mid-December. The tour picks up again in late April in Canada, ending in mid-May 2022. Total, the band plans on playing more than 75 shows and continuing to add to the itinerary. But with band members already experiencing health issues, it’s not looking too hot for the rock group.

When they announced the tour, band members Frank Beard (drummer) and Billy Gibbons (singer and guitarist) expressed their readiness to get back on tour in a press release.

“To say we’re looking forward to getting back out on the road and performing in front of real people is the understatement of the last 16 months, if not the century,” Beard said. Gibbons added, “ZZ is coming on strong. Let’s get it!”

How is ZZ Top Holding Up After 50 Years of Rocking Out?

ZZ Top started out in Houston, Texas more than 50 years ago in 1969. Since then, they’ve been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, sold millions of albums, and rocked iconic long beards for every performance.

But the band members aren’t as spry as they used to be. Seventy-two-yeard old Frank Beard, 71-year-old Billy Gibbons, and 72-year-old Dusty Hill experienced health problems in the past that also caused canceled shows. Back in 2014, Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Dusty Hill injured his hip when he slipped on the tour bus. At the time, the group canceled the rest of their tour with Jeff Beck. Hill already delayed the same tour when he experienced a bout of kidney stones right at the start of it.

Original band member and keyboardist Lanier Greig also died young at the age of 64 in 2013. He died in his sleep in his Austin, Texas, home, according to the “Houston Chronicle.”
