For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is just science. The Sheriff of Polk County Florida is proving that. We all know how wild Florida Man can be. The state’s Sunshine Law ensures that every police report is open to press scrutiny. As a result, we get some of the craziest stories out of the Sunshine State. However, one sheriff is trying to strike a balance. He just wants his constituents to mellow out.
Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County Florida has good reason to want people to chill out. Their murder rate is soaring this year. More specifically, the bodies are stacking up in the second half of the year. According to WFLA, a Tampa-based NBC affiliate, 34 people have been killed in the county this calendar year. However, not all of those were murders. Some were officer-involved shootings and “justified” homicides. Unfortunately, murder does make up the bulk of those deaths. In fact, murder victims account for 27 of those 34 people. Even worse, 23 of those murders happened since June.
With all of this in mind, Sheriff Judd reached out to his fellow Polk County Florida residence with an address. During the address, the sheriff asked his constituents to calm down with all the killing. Honestly, it is amazing that he could inject a little humor into such a dark situation. Sometimes, you just have to keep things light, no matter how much pressure you’re under. One WFLA anchor shared this clip with his Twitter followers.
This Florida Sheriff is keeping things simple. In the clip, he says, “Just chill out. Drink a 7Up, eat a MoonPie, quit murderin’ people.” However, that wasn’t all he had to say. It wasn’t the end of that homespun attitude either.
More from Polk County Florida Sheriff Grady Judd
While talking about the soaring murder rate, Sheriff Judd had a question for Florida residents. “What’s that all about?” It’s a fair question. This is especially true when you consider that all other crimes in the county are down but the murder rate is higher than it has been in recent years. In fact, this year’s murder rate so far matches that of the entirety of 2020.
The WFLA report states that several of those murders consisted of multiple victims. For instance, the sheriff’s office states that in September, a stranger killed four members of a Lakeland, Florida family. Additionally, people from out of town have committed multiple murders in Polk County. However, their latest murder was the result of domestic violence. So, there’s no one cause to the soaring murder rate.
Sheriff Judd showed that he was the perfect counterpart to Florida Man as he continued his address. “Just calm down. Quit murdering your friends and your family. I know that’s a novel idea for some people.”
