So many questions are left unanswered in the case of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie. As details continue to emerge, the YouTuber who spotted the couple’s white van in Wyoming is sharing her thoughts about finding the vehicle at the end of August.
Sitting down for ABC’s “20/20,” Jenn Bethune said she felt “goosebumps” all over when she and her husband spotted the Ford transit, The Sun reports.
“We both got goosebumps all over our body,” Bethune says. “We knew it was her van as soon as the footage passed by it.”
The Bethunes wanted to stop and say hello because they were surprised anyone else was out on the remote part of the trail. However, there was something eery and off about the way the van looked, Bethune said.
“And we’re like ‘We could go hang out with them,’ or go say ‘Hi’ – but the van was very dark,” she says.
Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were traveling through the country in the van they both worked to convert into a living space. The couple was documenting their road trip and sharing tons of social posts. Things weren’t as perfect as they seemed on Instagram, however. The two were separated for a night in Utah after a witness reportedly saw Brian hitting Gabby. Bodycam footage of the incident shows Gabby very emotional and shaken.
Gabby Petito’s Tragic Demise
Law enforcement seized the 2012-model van at Brian Laundrie’s home September 14. He returned home to Florida September 1 without Gabby. She was last seen alive by witnesses on August 24. Her body was later recovered on September 19.
Authorities found the 22-year-old not far from the location Bethune and her husband captured the van. She’d been strangled.
At the time, Jenn Bethune didn’t realize how important footage of the missing woman’s van would be. But she kept it anyway. She then turned it over to the police.
“I had got tagged on a story on Instagram by someone saying that the police timeline has changed,” Bethune said. “When we found the footage I’m like ‘Please, please keep recording. Please, please be on here.”
Luckily, the tip led to finding Gabby.
Further, following national attention on the missing woman, heads turned to Brian Laundrie and his involvement in her demise. But the 23-year-old hiker disappeared into the Carlton Reserve. This is a wildlife park near his family’s home in Florida. He told his parents he was going for a hike September 13 – two days after Gabby’s family filed a missing person’s report.
However, after a massive manhunt, his remains were also found. His parents, along with FBI agents, made the discovery October 21. His cause of death is unknown.
