Gabby Petito: A Timeline From Her Disappearance to Remains Being Found Matching Her Description

by Leanne Stahulak

On Sunday, Sept. 19 the FBI announced that human remains had been found in Grand Teton National Park that matched the description of Gabby Petito. Unfortunately, the authorities say it’s “likely” that the body is Petito’s.

The world has been tracking the 22-year-old’s missing person case for three weeks. Gabby Petito started out on a cross-country road trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, back in July. But he arrived alone at his family’s home in North Port, Florida, on Sept. 1. Petito hadn’t been seen or heard from since Aug. 30.

Now, her family grieves for her along with the rest of the world. And Laundrie, deemed a person-of-interest in the case, hasn’t been seen since Tuesday, Sept. 14. Authorities continue to search for him in Carlton Reserve, a county park in Sarasota, Florida.

Below is a timeline of all the events leading up to Gabby Petito’s disappearance, her presumed death, and the absence of her fiancé, via WKRN News.

July 2: Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie Kick-Off Their Cross-Country Road Trip

The couple left from Blue Point, New York, on July 2. Though they started out in a car, they soon switched to a 2012 Ford Transit Connect van so they could live out of it. Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie planned on visiting national parks out west in Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. They documented their travels on Petito’s Instagram page and a new YouTube channel called Nomadic Statik.

Aug. 12: Couple Gets Into Argument in Utah

Per Gabby Petito’s Instagram page, she and Laundrie visited Arches National Park in Moab, Utah on Aug. 12. But that same day, a witness reported to Moab City Police that the couple was arguing and getting physical.

“Officers conducted an investigation and determined that insufficient evidence existed to justify criminal charges,” Chief Bret Edge said in an email. The fight was less a “domestic assault” and more of a “mental health crisis” to the Moab police.

They told the couple to spend the night apart, so Petito slept in the van while police helped Laundrie get a hotel room.

Aug. 21: Gabby Petito FaceTimes Her Father for Last Time

Joseph Petito’s last known contact with his daughter took place on Aug. 21. She FaceTimed him to ask for his help in ordering food from Salt Lake City, Utah. The father said “no red flags popped out” at that time.

Four days later, on Aug. 25, Petito had one last phone call with her mother. Nicole Schmidt said that was the last contact they had because Gabby had supposedly “gone off the grid” near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Schmidt figured the service was just bad in the area.

Schmidt also reported that the last known text message from her daughter came on Aug. 30. “I don’t know if that was her texting me or not.”

Sept. 1: Brian Laundrie Arrives Home in Florida

But Laundrie arrived without his fiancée. He arrived in North Port with the same van he and Gabby Petito lived in for the last few months.

Sept. 11: Gabby Petito Reported Missing

Gabby Petito’s family hadn’t heard from her in over 10 days. So, they reported her missing to their local police division in Suffolk County, New York.

Sept. 15: Brian Laundrie Named a Person-of-Interest

Laundrie’s family last saw him on Tuesday, Sept. 14. They hired an attorney that day, who said in a statement, “On behalf of the Laundrie family it is our hope that the search for Miss Petito is successful and that Miss Petito is reunited with her family. On the advice of counsel, the Laundrie family is remaining in the background at this juncture and will have no further comment.”

The next day, the Petito family reached out to the Laundrie’s to ask for their help in finding Gabby. Joe Petito also spoke in a press conference to ask anyone out there to send in any information they had about his missing daughter.

Sept. 17: Laundrie Also Reported Missing

The family hadn’t seen or heard from him in days. Police searched the premises but couldn’t find him. They’re continuing to search the nearby Carlton Reserve for him.

Sept. 19: Remains Found that Match Gabby Petito’s Description

The FBI confirmed that a body had been discovered near Grand Teton National Park. They still have to complete an autopsy and confirm that it’s Gabby, but the remains match her description. Her family mourns for her at this time, as does the rest of the world who prayed she would be found alive and well.
