Gabby Petito Was Warned by Utah National Park Ranger That Relationship Looked ‘Toxic’: ‘I Can Still Hear Her Voice’

The list of people that interacted with Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie before their respective disappearances is a long one. One of the people who crossed paths with the young couple was NPS ranger Melissa Hulls of Arches National Park.

According to Deseret News, Hulls was doing her job when she heard a call over the radio that mentioned domestic assault. Hulls went to investigate. She soon found herself at the scene where 22-year old Gabby Petito was explaining the situation between her and her fiance Brian Laundrie. She was in the back of a police car when Hulls arrived.

Hoping she might be able to reach Gabby as a woman herself, Melissa Hulls talked to her about her “toxic” relationship.

“I can still hear her voice. She wasn’t just a face on the milk carton, she was real to me,” Hulls told Deseret News. “I was probably more candid with her than I should’ve been. I was imploring with her to reevaluate the relationship, asking her if she was happy in the relationship with him, and basically saying this was an opportunity for her to find another path, to make a change in her life.”

The Arches National Park ranger wanted to do whatever she could to help. But there is only so much one can do when dealing with such an emotionally charged situation.

“She had a lot of anxiety about being away from him, I honestly thought if anything was going to change it would be after they got home to Florida,” Hulls continued.

Weeks later, Laundrie would return to Florida. But Gabby Petito was nowhere to be found. The toughest part for Melissa Hulls was knowing that something was wrong and not being able to intervene. Hulls has wondered if she could have “found the right words” to create a different result in this tragic case.

The Search for Gabby Petito’s Fiance, ‘Person of Interest’ Brian Laundrie Continues

After returning home to Florida on September 1, Brian Laundrie soon disappeared. He is currently a person of interest regarding Gabby Petito’s case. And law enforcement has been conducting searches for him all over the place. One of the promising locations was the Carlton Reserve in Florida. Laundrie told his parents that’s where he was headed.

Law enforcement has since given up searching for Laundrie in that particular location.

“At this time, we currently believe we have exhausted all avenues in searching of the grounds there. Law enforcement agencies continue to search for Brian Laundrie. The North Port Police Department currently has no plans to conduct a major search of the Carlton Reserve today,” said Police Public Information Officer Josh Taylor.

The search for Brian Laundrie is ongoing. And the results of an autopsy for remains matching Petito’s description should be in sometime Tuesday.
