Following the release of the initial autopsy reports, officials decided to hold on to Gabby Petito’s body for further examination. They ran all sorts of forensics and toxicology screens. Weeks went by and her family was unable to reunite with the daughter they lost. In their press conference, the Petitos and Schmidts commented on the matter, saying they understood the officials’ choice to keep her body. They trusted that she would be kept “safe” until they could reunite.

This week, both families traveled to Wyoming together upon receiving clearance to collect Gabby’s ashes. Heartbreaking photos surfaced online of the moment they received Gabby’s ashes and this was immediately met with heat online. The family continues to use the large platform they’ve gained to keep their daughter’s memory alive while also trying to spread awareness to other individuals who deserve just as much coverage. This is what they said about her final words.

A ’60 Minutes’ Preview Shows Gabby Petito’s Family Won’t Back Down

The “60 Minutes” interview with Gabby Petito’s family is actually set for release today, October 17th. The special sees both the Petito and Schmidt sides openly discuss their daughter’s homicide. Nichole says: “This was like, evil. She was taken at someone else’s hand.”

The family then recounts their last interactions with Gabby. Joe remembers an exchange of affection. “The last thing I said to her, my very last sentence was I love you. And her last sentence to me was ‘I love you too’.”

Nichole also adds: “I hope she did not suffer and she was not in any pain. That she was in a place she wanted to be, looking at the beautiful mountains. You never, ever think it is going to be your [kid]. It is surreal.”

Family Says They Still Get Signs from Gabby

The family has stated multiple times that they strongly feel Gabby Petito’s presence watching over them. After news first broke of her homicide, they spotted a special license plate one day. It came from Florida and displayed “Gabs,” a nickname for their daughter.

A rainbow also appeared over the Spread Creek Dispersed Campsite upon the discovery of Gabby Petito’s body in the remote area. Most recently, social media users noted a heart in the mountain of Joseph Petito’s latest post. The family says the “signs are everywhere, you just need to look for them.”

Now, each of her parents and step-parents also bears a tattoo matching and designed by Gabby herself. It reads “Let it be” which also marks the quote found on their Foundation’s homepage alongside these other words:

“Lift up your heart and share with me / The memories that will always be.”
