Gabby Petito’s Parents Speak Out About Trying to Contact Brian Laundrie’s Parents After She First Went Missing

by Courtney Blackann

The Gabby Petito case continues to heat up as more information unfolds – and the public is demanding answers. The story of the 22-year-old and her fiancé Brian Laundrie continues to shock the nation with each new and bizarre detail that emerges. Most recently, Gabby’s parents, Joseph Petito and Nicole Schmidt gave an interview with “Dr. Phil” where they discussed their interaction with the Laundrie family.

Prior to filing a missing person’s report for their daughter, Gabby’s parents made attempts to call and text the Laundrie family about why Gabby suddenly stopped texting or calling. They got no response, they said, according to TODAY.

“A normal parent, when you text someone that they’re going to call the cops because you can’t find your child, they would reply,” Joseph Petito, told Dr. Phil. “No response, no nothing.”

Their silence worried the family. Gabby’s parents said they were confused why her fiancé and his family wouldn’t help them. Or even speak to them. The Petito family filed a missing person’s report Sept. 11. A week later, Gabby’s remains were found in a Wyoming national park. Then Brian Laundrie went missing and his parents haven’t said a word since.

“I do believe they know a lot more information than they’re putting out there,” Nicole Schmidt said about Laundrie’s family.  “Somebody needs to start talking.”

The family said the Laundrie’s silence is making things worse – not just for them – but for Brian as well. He’s the only person of interest in the Gabby Petito case. He is believed to have been the last person to see her alive. Additionally, Brian is wanted on unauthorized use of a credit card (this is how law enforcement will be able to detain the 23-year-old when and if he’s found).

Bizarre Details in the Gabby Petito Case

Since Brian Laundrie’s return home on Sept. 1, the case has taken twists and turns – with the truth lurking off in the distance. After traveling for two months in a converted Ford Transit, Brian returned without Gabby to his parents’ Florida home.

It is now also believed that Brian took a break in the trip on August 17 and flew home without Gabby – though his sister reportedly spoke with Gabby on FaceTime. He allegedly flew back to Wyoming on August 23 and reunited with his fiancé. This is about the time when Gabby was last heard from by her family.

Shortly after arriving home to Florida in September, Brian Laundrie did not speak with any law enforcement. He did not report anything unusual to the police about Gabby. But after the Petito family filed a missing person’s report, Brian vanished.

Since then, search efforts for the man have been exhaustive. The FBI is following up on various sightings of Laundrie as well as extensive searches in wildlife parks. So far, the search has turned up nothing useful.
