‘I Love Lucy’: Fans Debate Over New Photos of Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball in ‘Being the Ricardos’

I Love Lucy star and legendary comedian Lucille Ball is trending on Twitter due to a photo from Being The Ricardos. The film will take a look at the Hollywood icon’s life. Nicole Kidman is set to play Ball in the upcoming Aaron Sorkin project.

People have been arguing about whether or not Nicole Kidman should have been cast since it was announced. The argument got especially loud today when Hollywood Life tweeted out a photo of Nicole Kidman on set, calling her the “spitting image” of Lucille Ball. This was much to the internet’s amusement.

Many people are just poking gentle fun. They’re laughing at the fact that the phrase “spitting image” may be a bit too far when it comes to describing the actress’s resemblance to Lucille Ball. But some people were quick to point out that because they don’t look alike, Nicole Kidman shouldn’t play Lucille ball at all. Instead, people argue, the part should have gone to Deborah Messing. Deborah Messing is an actress, known primarily for comedic roles, who people say bears more resemblance to Lucille Ball.

Amongst other criticisms are that the role should have gone to a comedian and that Nicole Kidman won’t be able to capture the more expressive Lucille Ball. Though, others argue that that image is the one people saw of Ball publicly. The movie, Being The Ricardos, is set to be about Arnaz and Ball’s lives off-set, including difficulties in their marriage.

The Daughter of ‘I love Lucy’ Stars Speaks out in Support of Kidman

One of those people who are fighting back against the criticism is Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s daughter, Lucie. Right when the controversy first began, she posted a video detailing why the choice was made to cast Kidman to play the I Love Lucy star.

“I should at least try to calm the waters here,” She said. “Here’s the deal. What you should understand. We are not doing a remake of ‘I love Lucy’. Nobody has to impersonate Lucy Ricardo.” It’s the story of Lucille Ball, my actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo.”

Much to the amusement of some, that video hasn’t seemed to “calm the waters” much. Many people disagree with Ball and Arnaz’s daughter, saying the part still should have gone to someone else.

Very few people know who Lucille Ball truly was when the cameras were off. Being the Ricardos, aside from what its name may suggest, is supposed to portray that version of Ball, not the comedian most people are familiar with.

Unless you believe that people should be cast in biographical films based on looks alone, only time will truly tell if this was a miscast. The movie is currently filming, so it’ll still be a while before it hits the big screen and final judgments can truly be made.
