James Redford, son of Robert Redford, leaves us today after a long battle with liver cancer, his wife confirms via Twitter. He was only 58 years old.

Acting legend Robert Redford has lost a son today as James Redford, 58, passes from liver cancer. His death took place at him home in California this weekend following a long battle with the disease.

Today, his wife – Kyle Redford – took to Twitter to announce his death. Within, she includes several lovely photos of Redford’s life.

Redford will live on as a result of his filmmaking, activism, and documentary careers.

Family of James Redford mourn his death

“Jamie died today. We’re heartbroken. He had a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many. He will be deeply missed,” James’ wife writes on Twitter.

“As his wife of 32 yrs, I’m most grateful for the two spectacular children we [had] together. I don’t know what we would’ve done w/o them over the past 2yrs.”

Following in the footsteps of Robert Redford

James was a follower of his legendary father, Robert Redford, in many ways. He became a filmmaker and activist to change the world, and made many acclaimed documentaries focusing on his areas of activism.

His work included Paper Tigers for Amazon, Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution, and Watershed, an exploration of the new future for water in an increasingly dry Western U.S.

Robert Redford, too, remains an activist. One of his latest works as producer, Public Trust, “offers a condemning indictment of the Trump Administration’s record on protecting public lands from private interests.”

In a later interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Kyle confirms that James fought bile-duct cancer in his liver. The became apparent while Redford was awaiting an organ transplant this past November. His years-long struggle with liver disease – and then cancer – are now over. May he rest in peace.
