Joe Biden Releases Statement About Donald Trump’s Attack on Dr. Fauci

Joe Biden is standing up for Dr. Anthony Fauci after President Donald Trump called the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease a “disaster” on Monday. The former vice president and Democratic nominee for president also chastised the president for calling his top public health figures “idiots.”

Biden Releases Statement Defending Fauci

In a lengthy statement, Biden accused Trump of “waving the white flag” against coronavirus. Adding the president had decided to “cower and wallow in self pity” rather than fight the virus that has killed more than 220,000 Americans. John Hopkins University says more Americans have died from COVID-19 than any other nation in the world by far.

Trump called out his public health leaders during a phone call with campaign staff yesterday, the Associated Press reported. The comments came after Fauci gave an interview to “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday. In it, he claimed the White House had curtailed his availability with reporters after he began to disagree with Trump over the strategy to fight the coronavirus.

“People are tired of hearing Fauci and all these idiots,” Trump said. “Every time he goes on television, there’s always a bomb. But there’s a bigger bomb if you fire him. But Fauci’s a disaster.”

Biden seized on that quote in his rebuttal.

“They’re tired of your lies about this virus,” Biden said the statement. “They’re tired of watching more Americans die and more people lose their jobs because you refuse to take this pandemic seriously.”

Trump claims that if he’d taken Fauci’s advice there would have been more deaths in the United States. Though, he hasn’t provided any evidence of that claim.

“Fauci, if we listened to him, we’d have 700,000 to 800,000 deaths right now,” Trump said in the call, according to The Hill. “So, with that, I get along with him. If there’s a reporter on, you have it just the way I said it. I couldn’t care less.”

Joe Biden Will ‘Listen to the Scientists’ if Elected

At a rally in Nevada on Sunday, President Donald Trump warned that, if elected, Joe Biden would impose lockdowns and mandatory quarantines. Trump said the economy would shrink because of those restrictions, which have mostly advocated for by public health officials.

“If you vote for Biden, he will surrender your jobs to China. He will surrender your future to the virus. He’s going to lockdown. This guy wants a lockdown. He’ll listen to the scientists,” Trump said according to The Hill. “If I listen totally to the scientists, we would right now have a country that would be in a massive depression instead of, we’re like a rocket ship, take a look at the numbers.”

Biden’s camp jumped quickly on the statement. He quote tweeted the comment Monday with a simple reply of agreement: “…yes”

On Tuesday, Biden sent out another tweet featuring Trump’s “he’ll listen to the scientists” quote.

A Morning Consult poll of 1,986 registered voters shows that “nearly 2 in 3 voters rate Dr. Fauci’s coronavirus response as excellent or good,” Vox reported.

Moreover, an August Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that Americans trust Fauci far more than they do Trump or Biden.

Fauci and COVID-19 will most assuredly be a major point for questioning Thursday in Nashville when Biden and Trump take part in the final presidential debate of 2020.
