Singer John Legend has a few things to say about his fellow entertainers and their support of President Donald Trump’s reelection bid.
Legend, appearing at a rally for Democratic presidential Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris, says some need to open their eyes regarding Trump. Legend performed on stage for the rally along with rapper Common, according to Fox News.
“Now, some people see the meanness, the bullying, the selfishness of Donald Trump,” Legend says. “They mistake it for strength, a kind of twisted masculinity. Some see his greed and they mistake it for being good a business.”
Legend then told the crowd that some of the entertainment business have fallen prey to Trump’s influence. He specifically notes “some of your favorite rappers” to be in this group.
Legend Calls Out Rappers
“Some of your favorite rappers have been taken in by these lies,” he says. “I think they have even founded a new supergroup, it’s called ‘the Sunken Place.’ But Trump’s platinum plans for black folks is nothing but fool’s gold. Because you cannot bank on a word he says.”
While he didn’t call anyone out by name, many suspect Legend is referring to rappers Ice Cube and Lil Wayne. Cube, in particular, has been open about his desire to work with Trump on issues affecting the African American community. While he has not made an endorsement for Trump, Ice Cube says he is assisting Trump with the platinum plan.
According to Fox News, Trump’s “platinum plan” is designed to create opportunities for the black community. It would create 3 million jobs over the next four years and increase access to capital by nearly $500 billion. The plan also calls for immigration policies to protect American jobs.
The music icon says he reached out to both sides of the political spectrum but notes the Trump administration agreed to pursue his cause. He also states that the democratic party told him they would take up the matter after the election.
Wayne has also been complimentary of the president’s plan to aid African Americans. He recently tweeted that he had a productive meeting with Trump regarding progress of criminal reform and the platinum plan.
