A 31-year-old Lamborghini owner confused his pedals and ended up sinking his car into an Austrian lake on Tuesday.
They don’t make foreign cars simple, do they? Or maybe it’s just those fancy cars with the extra clutch pedal. Who knows.
Nach dem unerwarteten Ende von #KeineZeitzusterben bewarb sich ein Schweizer für die Nachfolge von #DanielCraig als #JamesBond. Seasoned drivers get into minor accidents all the time, innocently backing up into a pole or even taking out the entrance doors to a business. All it takes is slight disorientation.
But if you drive a $200,000 car into the lake, you’re going to become the talk of the town.
What Happened?
Jalopnik reported that the Lamborghini Huracán driver dropped off his passenger. Next, he attempted to turn the car around next to the lake in the town.
The Swiss driver told police he “must have mixed up the brake and accelerator pedals and drove backwards into the Mondsee.”
You could almost imagine seeing the car float through the air in slow motion with the engine winding up.
“The vehicle sank about 15 meters (49 feet) from the bank to a depth of about 5 meters (16 feet),” a police spokesperson said. “The driver was able to free himself from the vehicle and swim to the bank.”
Mondsee firefighters responded to the scene to retrieve the car. While the driver escaped with few injuries, his fantastic car sank 50 feet. Emergency personnel took the man to the hospital for his injuries.
Lamborghini Rescue Hard Work
The Lamborghini rescue effort took a little bit more time. Innerschwand Fire Brigade spokesperson Bernhard Strobl said the 3-hour recovery involved five firefighters, a team of divers, a recovery balloon, a tow truck, and a recovery crane. All told, 31 people worked to bring the car back on land.
“A lot of care was required to recover the valuable sports car,” Strobl said.
You’ve got to wonder how fast the insurance person took to look at the car and mark off the TOTALLED box on the insurance form.
Police and area officials joked that the driver thought his car was like the famous Lotus submarine car from the James Bond flick “The Spy Who Loved Me.”
In June, NBA player Terrence Ross has revealed that he had his $220,000 Lamborghini stolen and “totaled” overnight. The (U.K.) Independent newspaper reported that police chased the NBA star’s car, and the thief crashed the vehicle.
Social Media Reacts
A few Germans said they felt very sad in reading about the car’s accident.
One person wondered why the car had to be considered a total loss.
Another replied to the man, spelling it all out, “If water gets into the running engine, it is okay because (briefly) water (vs air) cannot be compressed and elements burst as a result. Then: electronics, warehouse, shafts defective and damp. Results in: repair costs> vehicle value.”
Got all that?
