Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay has three children. The actress plays Olivia Benson on the series and has done so since 1999. Since the start of the show, Hargitay has gotten married and had her children.
In 2004, Hargitay married her husband, Peter Hermann. Hermann actually played Defense Attorney Trevor Langan on Law & Order: SVU during that same year. Two years later, Hargitay gave birth to August Miklos Friedrich Hermann on June 28th.
Hargitay was incredibly excited to be pregnant. In an interview with People, she talked about the experience.
“Nobody wanted to be pregnant more than me. From the minute I found out, I was wearing full-on maternity pants. My stomach was totally flat, mind you, but I was just so excited,” the Law & Order: SVU actress told People in 2007. But during her third trimester, the actress was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
The ‘Law & Order: SVU’ Star Adopted Two Children after Giving Birth to Her First
By the time Mariska Hargitay was 49, she didn’t want to give birth to any more kids, but she and Peter still wanted to grow their family. That’s when they made the decision to adopt Amaya Josephine Hermann. They started the adoption process in 2010, and just a year later, the two adopted Amaya from Africa. All the while, Hargitay worked on Law & Order: SVU.
She loves how she’s been able to grow her family in multiple different ways.
“Having lost my mom at a young age, I then grew up with my stepmom, and I have half-siblings, and so I know that families can be built in all sorts of different ways, that there isn’t just one way to create a family and that it isn’t just about biology,” Hargitay explained to People in 2019.
“I think there is such beauty in the divine architecture of how this family was built,” she added.
But the family didn’t stop growing with Amaya.
In an unexpected turn of events, Hargitay and Hermann wound up adopting another child. Shortly after adopting Amaya, their adoption lawyer called them and informed them that a child was born prematurely and needed a home. They then brought home Andrew Nicolas Hargitay Hermann.
“It’s something that happened very quickly when adoption can take a long time,” Hargitay adds. “We were so beautifully and surprisingly … not because we’re not in sync, but surprisingly in sync about something so huge. So momentous.”
Hargitay describes Andrew as “this angel that fell out of the sky.”
Even with a busy home life, Hargitay isn’t slowing down professionally. She is still the leading lady of Law & Order: SVU. Now, she’s filming season 23 of the hit show. Law & Order: SVU will hit episode 500 this season, and it’s safe to say that there’s a lot to celebrate about everything that’s happened both on the show and behind the scenes. You can catch Law & Order: SVU‘s return on Thursday, September 23rd, on NBC.
