Massive 200-Acre Bison Ranch Goes for Sale in Hawaii: Take Drone Tour of the Amazing Property

Hanalei Bison Ranch is settled on the North shore of Kauai in Hawaii. It boasts a panoramic of lush, green trees and river access to Hanalei Bay. Neal Norman of Hawai’i Life describes it as having “crazy-amazing views.”

And it features 89 of America’s 500,000 remaining bison on its 200-plus acres. The place is “as rare as it gets” according to Norman, and currently listed at $32 million.

With Covid-19 hitting the U.S., many people looked to Hawaii as a place to escape; on Kauai’s North shore, “home sales increased 346% in the second quarter of 2021, compared to the same time period last year,” according to Mansion Global. Hanalei Bay is ideal for this influx of new residents; white sandy beaches, looming mountains, lush fields, forests, and marshland.

Hanalei also boasts a famous pier, built-in 1892. The pier was featured in the 1957 film South Pacific, and has been a local gathering place for fishing or sunset-gazing for decades. Another famous staple in Hanalei is the taro fields; taro is a heart-shaped plant “used to make poi, a Hawaiian staple starch that you can taste at any Kauai luau,” according to Go Hawaii. Clearly, there’s a little bit of everything on the Garden Island.

History of Hanalei Bison Ranch

The ranch was once owned by William “Buffalo Bill” Mowry, who passed in 2018. According to Mansion Global, the land is “part of a trust tied to Mowry”. While the ranch used to have 100 bison roaming the 228 acres, a 2018 winter storm on the island caused many of them to escape.

Local officials eventually rounded them up, as reported by Honolulu’s Star Advertiser.

The ranch features 3 homes, which are currently in need of “TLC,” according to Norman, with 6 additional home sites. Additionally, there are 6 parcels of land and 2 barns. The property includes ocean and river access, fruit tree groves, and is close to downtown Hanalei and the Princeville airport, according to the Hanalei Bison Ranch official website.

Take a Virtual Tour of the Ranch

On the Hanalei Bison Ranch Facebook page, viewers can take a virtual tour of the ranch via drone. The drone flies low over a herd of bison, sweeping over wide swaths of verdant land.

Idyllically, Hanalei Bison Ranch seems to stretch on forever; according to its website, the property has much potential “as a large private ranch estate and or parcels sold separately”.

The site goes on to state, “The lower flatlands act as the bison ranch and agriculture grounds, and the higher elevations serve as the residential sites facing west with stunning ocean views and year-round sunsets”.

Evidently, the property is truly unique and is waiting for its next generation of ranchers.
