McCormick Recalls Seasonings Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination: What to Know

If you just purchased some McCormick seasoning to spice up your meals at home, you may want to take a closer look.

McCormick & Co. is recalling several of its seasonings after discovering possible salmonella contamination.

Luckily, the contamination does not include every single one of the company’s products on the grocery store shelf. So, what is it you should look out for?

According to AP News, the company recalled McCormick Perfect Pinch Italian Seasoning, McCormick Culinary Italian Seasoning, and Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Ranch Seasoning. These are currently the only products people need to look out for.

Salmonella can be incredibly serious if contracted. It can cause what are often fatal infections in young children, the elderly, as well as those with already weak immune systems. You’ll know you’re possibly suffering from salmonella poisoning if you experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pains.

As of now, no one has reported getting sick from any McCormick products. The company wants to play it safe and make people aware of these risks. The products left facilities between June 20 and July 21. If you have one of these products, you can reach out to McCormick and get a full refund or a replacement.

Other Recalled Food

The FDA always has a list of updated recalled food items at hand for consumers. Other brands with recalls include some Cahill, Haen Meats, Backroad Country, BrightFarms, and Old Soul’s Farms products.

Tyson chicken was recently in the news after it recalled products due to possible listeria contamination. There were close to nine million pounds of frozen and cooked chicken possibly contaminated. Stores like Walmart, Kroger, Target, and others all had to deal with the recall. Some restaurants like Jet’s Pizza and Little Ceasars were also part of this recall.

According to USA Today, the listeria outbreak caused three illnesses and one death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued out a food safety alert where the products were shipped, which also included hospitals and schools.

There have been several companies and foods linked to this Listeria outbreak. There were several kinds of cheese with recalls in different Whole Foods stores across the country.

The Rise of Meal Kits

Meal kits have become exceptionally popular over the last few years. They are especially popular due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It allows food to show up at your door.

Brands like Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, and Home Chef continue to dominate the markets.

According to Dr. Brenna Ellison, an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, meal kits reduce waste as well.

“Meal kits are designed to provide households with precise quantities of ingredients to make a specific meal. They can reduce food waste, particularly for food items that are infrequently used and unavailable in small quantities. For example, if two people wanted to make hamburgers at home using a meal kit, they would receive two hamburger buns and just enough ground beef for two hamburger patties. At a grocery store, they cannot easily buy two hamburger buns only and a small enough quantity of ground beef for two patties,” Ellison said, according to USDA.
