McDonald’s Releasing Meat-free Burger Called the ‘McPlant’

Vegans and vegetarians rejoice! Eating meat-free is getting a little easier. McDonald’s is unveiling a new burger called the “McPlant.”

McDonald’s is bringing their new menu item to a drive-thru near you with the help of Beyond Meat, and it will be the first in a line of plant-based options to come. Beyond Meat said that this new partnership is “an exciting milestone” 

“McPlant – a delicious plant-based burger crafted for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s, and with the kind of craveable McDonald’s flavor our customers love,” wrote corporate headquarters in a blog post. “In fact, we think our culinary team nailed it.” 

The fast-food chain claims their new patty solidly recreates the flavor and texture of a beef burger. The meatless burger will come on a sesame seed bun with tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, mayo-style sauce, and American cheese. But for the vegans out there, be sure to ask them to hold the cheese because it isn’t dairy-free. So far, only a select few fast food joints offer truly vegan options, with Burger King being one of the most popular.

“We’re excited to work with Beyond Meat to drive innovation and this is an important step on our journey to bring high-quality, plant-based menu items to our customers,” announced McDonald’s Exec VP Francesca DeBiase.

McDonald’s is admittedly late to the party considering most fast-food chains have adapted to the recent change in eating habits. Major franchises and competitors, such as Wendy’s, Carl’s Jr., and White Castle have already introduced their own meatless burgers. But DeBiase said they said McDonald’s is ready to give its customers more choices.

The McPlant was supposed to make its way into US locations this year, but it’s a little behind schedule. The pea and rice protein patties are still in testing phases in Canada, Australia, Denmark, and Sweden. McDonald’s hasn’t announced when we’ll get our chance to try the new burger.

McDonald’s Got Rid of 7 Menu Items

Out with the old and in with the new. To make room for all its upcoming meatless menu items and deal with supply shortages, McDonald’s had to make some cuts. These are items that got the boot.

Variations of the Big Mac, the Little Mac, and the Double Big Mac. Those famous burgers were originally only going to be temporarily unavailable. But after pandemic-related struggles, McDonald’s never re-introduced them.

The same thing happened to the grilled chicken sandwiches and chicken tenders. CEO Chris Kempczinski said he hopes those items will make a comeback, but there is a good chance they’ll be gone forever.

Finally, the yogurt parfaits and salads have disappeared, and likely for good.

“We will certainly add things back to the menu,” Kempczinski said. “Whether it goes all the way back to where we were pre-COVID, I think that’s probably unlikely.”
