U.S. Military Returns After Officially Leaving Afghanistan

The touching moment comes just a couple of weeks after the U.S. military officially departed from Afghanistan. The War in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001. The war began less than a month after the September 11th attacks. It lasted for nearly 20 years.

13 U.S. military personnel were killed during an attack on Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. This attack took place during the evacuation. In retaliation for the airport attack, the U.S. military launched an airstrike against three suspected ISIL-KP members. This happened in the Nangarhar Province. A second drone strike occurred in Kabul. The strike’s target was a vehicle was transporting suspected ISIL-KP members.

President Biden stated the U.S. completed one of the biggest airlifts in history. The military forces were able to evacuate more than 120,000 people.

“No nation has ever done anything like it in all of history. Only the United States had the capability and the will and the ability to do it. And we did it today.”

President Biden further claimed that more than 5,500 Americans got out during the evacuation. “We got out thousands of citizens and diplomats from those countries that went into Afghanistan with us to get bin Laden.”

The War in Afghanistan is considered the longest war in U.S. history. It surpassed the Vietnam War by five months.

Drone Attack Occurs Near U.S. Military Forces in Northern Iraq

On the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, a drone attack reportedly occurred. This was near U.S. military forces that are currently at the Erbil International Airport in Northern Iraq. According to Reuters, the Iraqi Kurdish security officials confirmed the attack and said three rockets hit near the airport. Kurdish counter-terrorism forces confirm the attack is from explosive-laden drones.

The media outlet also reports that the U.S. military officials are blaming previous attacks on Iran-aligned Shi’ite Muslim militias. This is the same group that previously stated it was planning to fight until the final 2,500 U.S. military personnel have left Iraq.

There have yet to be any casualties reported during the latest drone attack. Those who witnessed the incident said they heard a total of six explosions. The U.S. military is now leading an international coalition to help Iraqi forces fight against what’s left the Sunni extremist Islamic State group. U.S. officials have yet to comment on the situation.
