Naya Rivera, ‘Glee’ Star, ‘Presumed Dead’ After Going Out on Boat and Not Returning

by Hunter Miller

Actress Naya Rivera is presumed dead after going missing on Wednesday afternoon. She was out on a lake in Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County, California with her 4-year-old son.

The Glee star and her child rented a pontoon boat on Lake Piru north of downtown Los Angeles. The 33-year-old mother and her son went out on the water around 1 p.m.

About three hours later, another boater found her child asleep and alone in the boat, CBS Los Angeles reports. The search for Rivera began immediately after the boater notified officials. Law enforcement deployed a team of helicopters, drones, and dive teams to search for Rivera.

The child reportedly told investigators that he and his mother were swimming. However, his mother never got back in the boat. It remains unclear how the child got back in the boat.

Capt. Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office addressed the incident. “There’s a lot of challenges in a reservoir this size, at times with visibility,” Capt. Buschow said. He continued by adding, “I don’t have details yet as to the depth of the area where the boat was found or what conditions they’re encountering out there.”

Capt. Buschow says Rivera’s child had on a life vest. He also mentions that authorities found an adult life vest on the boat.

The pontoon boat that Naya Rivera and her son rented remained on the water. However, the vehicle that the two drove to Lake Piru was removed from the scene.
