“NCIS: Los Angeles” might be star Gerald McRaney’s most recent acting stint, but it’s far from his first or best performance. Many fans also recognize the 74-year-old actor from his time on classic 80s shows like “Simon & Simon” or “Major Dad.”
Something both of those shows have in common? McRaney portrayed a Marine as the titular character, bringing veterans and military members to life on screen.
The “NCIS” actor recently sat down with the hosts of “The Talk” to discuss his film and television career. At one point, host Sheryl Underwood brought up his role on “Major Dad” and what that meant to audiences.
“Major Dad, to me, was one of the best shows that showed tough and lovable. And it was a great representation of a military [service member],” Underwood said in a short clip posted to the official “The Talk” Instagram page.
“It’s interesting. On ‘Simon& Simon,’ I chose to make Rick a former Marine,” McRaney explained. “And then on ‘Major Dad,’ of course, I brought that full circle. Back in the 70s, a lot of the shows on TV, if they portrayed veterans, it was always the crazed Vietnam veteran who’s in trouble with the law.”
The “NCIS: Los Angeles” star continued, “And because I had family and friends who were military people, when I got my chance, I wanted to sort of correct the record there that these guys are not crazy and they’re not superheroes. They’re our neighbors. And they’re our families.”
McRaney’s response prompted a huge round of applause from the hosts and the audience. We’re not surprised, considering his incredible words and his dedication to doing veterans right in the entertainment industry.
