The sheriff in Butler, Ohio has issued a warning to anyone looking to cause the police trouble in his county. Sheriff Richard Jones promised police retaliation if threatened.
“I won’t tolerate it period. You shoot at the police, expect us to shoot back,” Jones said in a press release Wednesday.
Over the past few months, Jones said he has seen “lawlessness” overtake much of the country. Violence has been directed toward the police. For instance, Jones recounted altercations where law enforcement had water dumped on them or were pelted by bricks and frozen water bottles in New York. In Portland, Oregon, he said, lasers also blinded some officers. In Chicago and throughout the country, people have shot at the police.
“I will not allow my deputies or any law enforcement officer in Butler County to take the abuse I have seen over the past several months,” Jones said in the release. “If you come to this county expecting a free pass to harm one of my men or women in uniform keep in mind, nothing in life is free.”
Both protests and riots have captured the national spotlight this year after the death of George Floyd in police custody. Across the country, thousands of people took to the streets to protest both police brutality and systematic racism. Some have questioned the police’s role as a peacekeeping force and called for its defunding. This fervor was renewed in recent weeks by the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The state’s governor called in the National Guard to break up three nights of protests and violent riots.
Sheriff Richard Jones made headlines for refusing to enforce a mask policy.
Jones also made national headlines back in July for refusing to enforce a mandatory mask policy in his county. Ohio’s governor issued a mandatory mask order for any public indoor location.
“I’m am not going to be the mask police,” Jones told Fox 19 Now. “I’m not going to enforce mask policy to where my deputies stop people and say, ‘Put your mask on.’ That’s not going to be the case. It’s out of control and if people want to wear a mask then they should be able to wear a mask and if not they shouldn’t.”
