Some KFC Restaurants Are Being Forced to Cut Back on Menu Items: Here’s Why

Some people feel like we’re living in a post-pandemic world. However, COVID is still throwing great big monkey wrenches into the gears of several operations. This is especially true for some restaurant chains. Some KFC restaurants are facing supply chain issues that are forcing them to take some items off the menu.

However, if you’re in the United States, this isn’t something you have to worry about. Our friends across the pond are the ones who are feeling the pinch from these issues. KFC restaurants across the UK are having serious issues getting some vital items to their stores. Things like paper takeout bags, chicken boxes, lids, and straws are currently in short supply. As a result, they’re having to make do with what they have, according to Yahoo! News.

Some UK KFC locations are using unbranded bags and odd-sized boxes to deliver their Kentucky fried goodness to eager customers. However, paper products and packaging are only the tip of the shortage iceberg. Many locations are also having a hard time getting their hands on salt packets and sauces. The sauce shortage is affecting barbecue dipping sauce, ketchup, and mayo. If you think that’s rough, it gets worse. They’re also short on seasonings. The very cornerstone of the Kentucky Fried Experience is the 11 herbs and spices. You can’t have good fried chicken without herbs and spices!

These shortages are causing some KFC locations to serve a reduced menu. Several UK locations have taken hot beverages as well as milkshakes off the menu for the time being.

Statements from KFC

In a statement, a spokesperson for KFC said, “We’re still open and serving our iconic fried chicken – all thanks to our incredible team members. They’re doing a brilliant job keeping the fryers going, so please be kind to them.”

That spokesperson added that if supply chain issues limit the amount of chicken they can get, some KFC locations will have to make temporary changes to their menu.

However, KFC UK isn’t just making statements to news outlets. They are also connecting directly with their customers. Recently, the chicken chain tweeted about the issues they’re facing.

In the tweet, KFC UK said that they had a “message from the Colonel,” for their customers. Under that was a photo containing a note that explained that they were doing their best to keep things running as smoothly as possible. It noted that “There’s been some disruption over the last few weeks – so things might be a little different when you next visit us.”

The note from the Colonel went on to say, “You might find some items aren’t available or our packaging might look a little different to normal. We know it’s not ideal, but we’re working hard to keep things running smoothly.”
