Biles is the reigning champion. When she landed a vault in Team USA’s first rotation, she immediately huddled with a team trainer. Shortly after, Biles exited the competition floor. Several minutes later, viewers were shocked to see Biles sporting some bandage all on her right leg.
She was seen taking her grips off before hugging Grace McCallum, Sunisa Lee, and Jordan Chiles. She put on her sweatpants and vanished from the Olympics stage. Biles’ withdrawal seemed to be due to a medical issue. After she left, Team USA lost the gold in the team round for the first time since 2008.
Russia instead won with a 3.432 point difference.
Simone Biles Speaks Out on Withdrawal
Now, everyone is wondering if Simone Biles will return for the all-around competition Thursday, where she is the reigning champion.
She recently spoke out regarding her withdrawal, stating that it was not actually medically related. “Physically, I feel good, I’m in shape. Emotionally, that kind of varies on the time and moment. Coming here to the Olympics and being the head star isn’t an easy feat, so we’re just trying to take it one day at a time and we’ll see,” Biles told Hoda Kotb during an exclusive interview with Today.
As for Thursday’s competition, Biles said she was taking it all “day by day.” She also qualified for all the event finals happening later on in the Games. Her sudden withdrawal shocked her fellow teammates. However, her absence forced them to put on their absolute best performances.
“They were like crying, and I was like, ‘You guys need to relax, you’re going to be fine without me. Go out there, kick some butt just like you’ve done in training, and just lay it out on the floor and see what happens,'” Biles said.
After Sunday’s qualifying competition, Simone Biles wrote on Instagram about how difficult being the shining star of the Olympics has been so far. In many ways, she is the face of Team USA at the Tokyo Games. The whole world was waiting to see her incredible athleticism and grace as a gymnast. It’s a pressure that no one can truly relate to or understand.
“It wasn’t an easy day or my best, but I got through it. I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times,” she wrote. She came out on top during the all-around qualifying round, however, she suffered a few mishaps that are uncommon for her.
Simone Biles has been vocal that she pulled out of the event because she wasn’t in the right place mentally. She feared that if she performed her dangerous stunts as she normally would she would potentially face a nasty injury. The amount of stress and pressure at the Olympics caused her to struggle mentally.
