2020 Tokyo Olympics: Team USA Sets World Record for Gold in Men’s 4x100m Relay, Caeleb Dressel Gets 5th Gold Medal

The United States men’s swimming team continued to roll on Saturday at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. They rolled right on to yet another gold medal.

The U.S. men and women have both been dominant at this year’s World Games. But on the men’s side, they just broke a world record in the 4×100 medley relay. Led by Caeleb Dressel who just picked up his remarkable fifth gold medal, the Americans were able to pull out another close victory in swimming. In addition, Dressel also won the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle event earlier in the day.

The race itself, however, began with the United States’ Ryan Murphy on backstroke. Next up was Michael Andrew who had the American team in second place after he completed his breaststroke leg. They were trailing right behind Great Britain.

Then, however, came Caeleb Dressel. He is widely viewed as the team’s leader, and after his performance on Saturday night, it’s easy to see why. Dressel regained the lead for the United States men’s team and then closing it out was Zach Apple, who held strong during the freestyle leg.

Meanwhile, the official Twitter account of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics tweeted out a video of the 4×100 race. It was an incredibly close finish, have a look below:

They captioned the clip, “FROM LANE 1, TEAM USA WINS GOLD! @TeamUSA #TokyoOlympics”

“We spent 14 months in isolation and doing the right thing and we trusted in each other,” Murphy said after the race. “It’s just really special.”

It’s special for sure. But it would have been shocking if the Americans wouldn’t have won the gold medal. After all, they have never lost in the men’s medley relay at the Olympics. There was only one occasion the team didn’t win gold. And that was when they decided to boycott the Moscow Games in 1980.

Great Britain Picks Up Silver Medal, Italy Picks Up Bronze at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Great Britain came up just short behind the American squad. But they were able to take home the silver medal in the 4×100 relay. Although, they very likely could have won the gold. They were right near the front for the entire race and even held the lead at one point. There’s no doubt they will be taking a closer look at how they can improve moving forward. And just behind the United States and Great Britain was Italy, which took home the bronze medal.

“Now that was an awesome race,” one fan wrote on Twitter. “Dressel came from down town to fix everyone right. Now that is a race to remember. Congrats boys, you all deserve that award record race.”

“Dressel is our new Phelps,” another follower exclaimed. “We have our new leader.”
