Team USA’s 2020 Olympic outfits were revealed earlier this week as the world prepared for the 2020 Olympics opening ceremonies. And, the Twitterverse has a lot to say about the patriotic design.

The one-of-a-kind outfits designed by iconic fashion designer Ralph Lauren consist of a theme that the designer calls an “all American look.”

The outfit includes jeans, a blazer, white sneakers, and a neck scarf which the decorations were inspired by the American Flag.

The unique design was revealed mid-week before our Olympians donned the look during the 2020 Olympics opening events. After the reveal, many watchers took to Twitter to discuss the blue-blazered “preppy” ensemble. Many of the comments likened the designs to something extra pretentious or overly preppy.

Are the USA’s Olympics Uniforms Too Preppy

“These outfits picked me last in gym class,” one Twitter user wrote of the look. Another compared Ralph Lauren’s Olympic design to the uniforms a member of a yacht club would wear.

While the look is certainly very American, it may lean a tad too far on the preppy side. Especially for the average American, as many pointed out on Twitter. It seems that for many, this look represents many things that the average American is not typically a part of. Such as elite prep schools to the yachting crowds.

“The Team USA Ralph Lauren outfits look like they’re meeting at the Yacht Club for brandy after a hard day of watching their trust fund grow,” JSWilliams1962 wrote on a recent Twitter post.

According to “Today,” some users claimed that along with the outfits being too preppy, they were “severely lacking in ‘drip.'”

What Makes the Look ‘Too Much?’

It seems that much of the consensus falls to one very important fact. These 2020 Olympics outfits our United States competitors are wearing simply do not reflect the “every person” that makes up this country. While the patriotic theme seems to be appreciated, the overall look is very outdated. Ultimately representing a United States that once WAS. Rather than acknowledging a country that has since evolved from the blazer-wearing, neck-scarf tying, skinny-jeans-wearing crowd. Essentially, watchers wanted less “prep” and more fun in the one-of-a-kind design.

“Team USA’s 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony Parade Uniform is a classic all-American look that incorporates sustainable materials within each piece,” a press release describing the uniforms said after the unveiling earlier this week.

The USA’s 2020 Olympics look includes a navy blazer, a striped T-shirt, a flag-printed scarf, slim-fit jeans, a striped belt, a cotton mask The outfit also includes coordinating shoes that feature more red, white and blue. The USA’s flag bearer will stand out as the only one in the crowd wearing a white denim jacket.
