Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray drifted back in the pocket, then darted to his left as final seconds ticked away. He heaved a pass, praying and hoping DeAndre Hopkins somehow could catch the ball in the end zone.
Touchdown! Amazing. Cardinals win, 32-20.
On the play, Murray broke a tackle and got off the pass just as he was about to be hit by two Buffalo defenders. Hopkins timed his jump perfectly as three defensive backs fell to the ground.
Statistically, it was a 43-yard catch.
And technically, it wasn’t the final play of the game. Hopkins somehow caught the pass between three defenders with two seconds to go.
Then, with Arizona lining up in victory formation, Murray took a knee. There was no need to try for the extra point. Then, the Cardinals could celebrate their 32-30 win, their sixth of the season.
Last Seconds Were Dramatic
Only 34 seconds earlier, Buffalo fans were slapping high fives over what the Bills believed would be a win. Quarterback Josh Allen’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs had given Buffalo the lead.
Murray probably was more exhausted than usual after the game. The smallest quarterback in the NFL rushed for 61 yards and two touchdowns. He threw for 245 yards, with the one score, that spectacular throw to Hopkins.
Murray’s post-game tweet went viral Sunday night.
Meanwhile, Hopkins caught seven passes for 127 yards. He’s fitting in well in his first season in Arizona.
The victory pushed Arizona to 6-3. Buffalo dropped to 7-3. In this crazy season, both teams can consider themselves among the elite as the season starts the second half of the schedule.
ESPN reported that the score was the first successful Hail Mary fourth-quarter pass since 2015. The last time was when Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers combined with Richard Rodgers to beat Detroit.
The Reaction to the DeAndre Hopkins Catch Was Immediate
The Arizona official social media account was going crazy, tweeting “HOP CAUGHT IT.”
And, there was more:
