Cleveland Browns quarterback, Baker Mayfield, has a lot more than a powerful throwing arm, he’s got quite the sense of humor too.
While Baker Mayfield was the No.1 draft pick in 2018 for Cleveland, he leads the team in a lot more than completed passes. He is the team clown in every sense.
Baker Mayfield Deploys Easter Eggs
Recently during interviews, Mayfield has taken to adding “easter eggs” into his explanation of questions reporters ask him. The easter eggs involve specifically quoting from movies, songs, or TV shows. Maybe Mayfield was just as bored as the rest of us during quarantine and binged his own massive share of TV and movies.
After a question about the team’s loss against the Indianapolis Colts, he answered on learning through the wins.
“We don’t have to learn from a loss. We can get better after a win. It’s the mindset of trying to be just a bunch of big hairy American winning machines is important,” he said.
This is a direct reference to the movie “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” with Will Ferrell starring as a hilarious NASCAR driver.
Recently, Miles Garret, a defensive end for the Browns, has been generating a lot of talk about his style on the field. Garrett was one of the players who were on the COVID-19 list. Right now he is listed as questionable on being able to play today’s game against the Steelers.
Baker Mayfield had a lot to say about Garrett’s smooth moves on the field. He compared him to some pretty classic Lil Wayne lyrics from “6 Foot 7 Foot,” which are the “Real Gs move in silence like lasagna.”
When fans were amused by his rap comparison with Garrett, he channeled the Snoop Dogg within from the song “Nuthin’ But a ‘G” Thang.”
“They knew that Miles was out. They knew they had to get funky on the field it’s ‘like an old batch of collard greens.'”
The Wannabe ‘The Office’ Star
Mayfield’s quotes have become a shining light in any NFL press conference. Part of it is that fans now expect it and wait for it to happen. Like a true comedy king, Mayfield doesn’t give any indication that he just said a quote.
He delivers the quote mixed into his answer with a straight face and no giggle, it’s the most impressive part of it all. It’s like he’s Ron Swanson or Dwight Schrute on “The Office” talking to the camera, but being entertainingly emotionless.
He must know this too, since he’s quoted both of these comedic characters.
“There are only two things I hate more than missing throws and that is lying and skim milk. And skim milk is just water lying about being milk,” Mayfield said to channel Ron Swanson.
Browns in the Playoffs
In another interview he even said the famous line from Dwight Schrute, “Whenever I am about to do something, I think, ‘Would an idiot do that?’ And if they would, then I don’t do that.”
Certainly, he has not been an idiot. In fact, he has been one of the driving forces in Cleveland Brown’s success this season.
Baker Mayfield is currently leading the Browns into the first round of the playoff tonight. According to the Cleveland Browns site, Harrison Bryant, Ronnie Harrison Jr., and Malcolm Smith have been activated from the COVID-19 list for the game. If they manage to win, it would be one of the biggest upsets in the team’s history.
But that’s just how the Browns function this season they know how to, “Stop. Drop. Shut ’em down. Open up shop. Like, oh no. That’s how Ruff Ryders roll.”
