Bill Belichick Reportedly Thinks 2020 NFL Season is a ‘Joke’

A former New England Patriot offensive lineman thinks his former coach, Bill Belichick, is treating the the 2020 NFL season as a throwaway.

Matt Light, who played for Belichick for several years, says he believes the super bowl winning coach thinks this season is a “joke.”

“This is not the game of football we all know,” Light says on the Greg Hill Show. “It is something other than that. Bill recognizes it early on. I firmly believe that.”

Light may have a point as the COVID-19 pandemic has deeply affected the world of sports and especially NFL football. Now in retirement, Light argues that the current season is a miss with the cancelation of practices, missing training camp, quarantines, and game rescheduling. The Super Bowl Champion also says no one is taking 2020 seriously anyway, according to TMZ Sports.

Belichick, Patriots Struggling in 2020

Perhaps Light is correct as the New England Patriots have not played good football this year. Without their all-time great quarterback, Tom Brady, the Patriots have a current record of 2-5. That puts them at third place in their division, ahead of only the winless New York Jets. The Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins are both well ahead of the Patriots in the AFC East division.

Light was with Belichick and the Patriots from 2001 and 2011. He and his former coach still have a relationship and the lineman is convinced Belichick is preparing his team for the future instead of dwelling on the current situation.

“Five years from now, when we look back on this season, are we going to be talking about it?” Light asks. “No one is going to look back on the 2020 season and compare it to anything other than, ‘It was a joke.’ It was ridiculous.”

The Patriots will take on the New York Jets in next week’s edition of ESPN Monday Night Football.
