Unsurprisingly, there have been a variety of opinions about the recent decision by the New England Patriots to release quarterback Cam Newton from the team. One person who has offered his thoughts on the matter is “Blue Bloods” star Donnie Wahlberg.

Wahlberg, a longtime fan of the Patriots, shared his thoughts with TMZ Sports. The media outlet approached the “Blue Bloods” star on a New York City street.

“I love Cam,” the 52-year-old actor said from behind his mask. He went on to share his thoughts on what he believes Newton could have done for his favorite football team. “I thought he was going to lead us to the Super Bowl,” Wahlberg added.

Cam Newton was passed over for the quarterback job in New England. Instead, it will be rookie Mac Jones who will lead the Patriots this season. And even though the “Blue Bloods” star is a Newton fan, he wasn’t completely upset that Jones is now the team’s quarterback.

“I like Mac, too. So, it’s a tough situation,” Donnie Wahlberg also said.

Wahlberg was then asked to expand on his thoughts about Mac Jones as the quarterback of the New England Patriots. “So, you’re ready for the Mac Jones era to start,” the interviewer wanted to know. The actor’s answer was a straightforward one: He believes in the decisions Patriots head coach Bill Belichick makes for the team.

“It doesn’t matter if I’m ready, it’s starting,” the “Blue Bloods” star also explained. “So, Belichick is Belichick. If you’re a Patriots fan, you trust him and that’s it.”

The idea of Newton as a backup for New England isn’t one Wahlberg agreed with. “Cam is probably going to be a start somewhere else. I’m telling you, I think he was going to take the Patriots to the Super Bowl. And, hopefully, Mac will as well. So, we’ll see what happens.”

Donnie Wahlberg then said he hopes for the best for Cam Newton. He also wants his Patriots to win. “I’m rooting for Cam. I’m rooting for the Patriots, obviously, because I’m a Patriots fan,” he shared as he signed autographs.

As to why Newton was released from the Patriots, Wahlberg said he felt that the quarterback was released so he could be a starter for another NFL team. “I think they probably wanted Mac. Knowing Belichick – I could be wrong – but I think he would want Cam to have a chance to start elsewhere. And, hopefully, Cam will.”

As the interview drew to a close, the “Blue Bloods” actor reiterated his support for the Patriots and their longtime coach. “I always believe in Belichick. And I believe in Cam and I believe in Mac Jones. They’re just going to be on different teams.”

You can watch Donnie Wahlberg in “Blue Bloods” when the show’s 12th season debuts on Oct. 1.
