The 2020 National Football League season is over for quarterback Cam Newton and the New England Patriots.
It is unlikely that Newton, a former Carolina Panthers quarterback, returns to the Patriots for the 2021 NFL season. With his season over, Newton offers up some observations on his Patriot teammates and coaches as he heads out the door and into free agency.
The former number one overall NFL draft pick had some interesting remarks regarding Pats head coach Bill Belichick. The New England head man isn’t exactly known for his sense of humor or personality but Newton sees otherwise. The quarterback pondered aloud if his head coach would break out of his shell with a few adult beverages.
Cam Newton Calls Bill Belichick ‘Cool’
During what is likely his final meeting with the New England media, Newton is asked by a reporter for his lasting memory of Belichick. Given the coach’s reputation for being straight edge, Newton’s answer took many by surprise.
In the quote, Newton says his lasting impression of the super bowl-winning coach is that he is a “cool guy.”
“How cool he was,” Newton said, as transcribed by ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “I really thought it was like, ‘Oh my goodness, he’s going to be that principal you never want to see in the hallways.’ … But he’s a guy you just want to have a drink with. I bet he’d be so dope at a bar. He has stories out the wazoo.”
While it isn’t known if Belichick will be frequenting any bars any time soon, the coach is likely ready to put the season behind him. Despite solid play from Newton, the Patriots’ season did not go the way that many people thought it would.
The Pats finished 7-9 on the season, their first losing season in a quite a while. The team finished in third place in the NFC East, falling in behind the Buffalo Bill and Miami Dolphins. The lowly New York Jets took last place in the division with a 2-14 record on the year.
