Central Michigan Football Quarterback in Serious Condition After Being Shot

Central Michigan quarterback John Keller is reportedly in serious condition after a shooting at an apartment complex near campus on Saturday morning.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Office was called out to a property on a report of shots fired around 1 a.m. on Saturday morning. When they arrived, they located two men in their early twenties with apparent gunshot wounds. Both of the young men were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Central Michigan University Dr. Bob Davies made an announcement earlier in the day. He says that the 21-year-old quarterback was one of the victims of the shooting. In addition, fellow 23-year-old CMU senior Tyler Bunting was also shot. Bunting went to a nearby hospital via an emergency airlift. He is now in stable condition. Keller, however, is evidently in serious condition according to the Isabella Sheriff’s department.

“The two men that were injured in the shooting off campus yesterday are recovering,” the Sherrif’s department said in a release.

The University’s student newspaper, Central Michigan Life, dove into more details of the incident. The shooting first occurred after a fight broke out at an off-campus party. “Several subjects” reportedly arrived before then going to a vehicle to get a weapon. Once they returned, they started shooting. But the suspect or suspects have not yet been found at this time.

“I and many other CMU staff have personally reached out to each of the students and their families to offer support,” Davies said in a statement. “We are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers. Please join me in hoping for a speedy recovery for both individuals. Local law enforcement, led by the Isabella County Sheriff, continues to investigate the incident and is searching for the suspect or suspects involved.”

Central Michigan Coaches Ask for Prayers for Keller

John Keller is a six-foot, one-inch, 203-pound quarterback who previously started as a walk-on at the University of Cincinnati. However, he went on to transfer to Pearl River Community College before landing at CMU in 2020.

Meanwhile, Central Michigan football coaches have taken to social media after hearing the tragic news. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Kevin Barbay, is perhaps one of the people closest on the team to Keller. As a result, he recently posted to Twitter asking everyone to keep the young man in their thoughts and prayers.

“Asking for prayers for one of our quarterbacks John Keller, his family, and our Central Michigan community,” Barbay wrote on Twitter. “He is a tough young man with a great family that could use everyone’s prayers right now.”
