Charles Barkley is a legend for a multitude of reasons. The NBA legend played many years in the NBA. Including the likes of the Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Houston Rockets. He had one of the best careers of any modern-day power forward. Since his playing days, he has shined TNT’s NBA show Inside The NBA. Because of his celebrity status, there is a lot you probably already know about Barkley, but did you know why he named his daughter after a mall?
His daughter is named after a shopping mall in Delaware. Yes, back in his playing days in Philadelphia, Delaware was not all that far for Barkley and he loved that particular shopping mall called Christiana. He just liked frequenting that particular mall and he liked the way the mall sounded.
Charles Barkley And Michael Jordan
Barkley never won a ring, but Barkley was one of the most dominant players from his era. Unfortunately, his era also had to coincide with Michael Jordan. Jordan’s dominance clouded the careers of guys like Barkley, Hakeem, Clyde Drexler, Gary Payton, and so many others. This was because everything they did was compared to what Michael accomplished in Chicago.
Are Barkley and Jordan still friends? He said “We’re not,” to Bob Costas in a previous interview.
He continued, “And I take some responsibility for that. I criticized [him]–he was one of my best friends, and I definitely love him and miss him, to be honest with you, but I, Bob, I have to do my job. I said, at the time, and we can debate whether I should have said it, but I was asked a question, and I’m told always be honest at my job.” This has always been Barkley.
He continued, “I said, ‘I don’t know if Michael’s ever going to be successful [running the Charlotte Hornets] because I don’t know if he got enough strong people around him.’”
What Next for Charles Barkley?
It appears it was something that Barkley said that burned the friendship. His critique had to do with whether or not Michael could ever be successful running the Hornets. This was a fair question given the past history of the Hornets and Bobcats. Unfortunately, it sounds like that public criticism changed the dynamic between the two longtime rivals and friends.
Barkley told SI in 2012, “I love Michael, but he just has not done a good job.” This was back when the Hornets were still the Bobcats. He concluded, “Even though he is one of my great friends, I can’t get on here and tell you he’s done a great job. He has not done a great job, plain and simple.”
So that’s where Barkley and Michael are now it seems. It’s sad, but perhaps time will heal the friendship, only time will tell, though.
