College Football Player Dies Shortly After Team’s Season Opener

Tragic news in Canada. Francis Perron, a defensive lineman at the University of Ottawa, passed away shortly after the college football team’s season opener on Saturday (September 18th).

In a press release, Jacques Frémont, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ottawa, revealed the sad news about the 25-year-old college football player’s passing. “Francis Perron, one of our Mechanical Engineering students and a defensive lineman in his fifth season with Gee-Gees football, died shortly after a game between Ottawa and the University of Toronto.”

Frémont described the college football player as a bright, passionate, and caring person. He also said that Perron poured himself into his “craft” as a player and his academic pursuits of becoming an engineer. “In the classroom, he was as big of a star as on the field. Becoming a multiple-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian while studying Mechanical Engineering.”

Frémont also reported that Perron joined the Gee-Gees college football team in 2017. The president and vice-chancellor also offered his condolences to Perron’s friends, family, and loved ones at this time. “I know how deeply this loss affects the student’s teammates, Gee-Gees staff, and all members of the Gee-Gee community. Our thoughts are with you in your grief, which we share.”

There has yet to be any information about the college football player’s death, including what caused it, at this time. Frémont added that the University will hold a memorial ceremony in the coming weeks. “While we do not yet have the details, we will keep you informed, while respecting the family’s wishes.”

College Football Team Mourns the Sudden Loss of Francis Perron

Following the news of Francis Perron sudden death, the college football player’s coaches and teammates shared their thoughts in a Twitter post. “It is with extremely heavy hearts that we share the news that we have lost one of our own. Gee-Gees football player, Francis Perron passed away yesterday. Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to everyone whose life he has touched.”

Fans of the college football team also shared their sympathy for Perron’s friends and family. One person tweeted, “Condolences to the family and the whole Gee-Gees community!”

Ontario University Athletics also tweeted, “The thoughts and condolences of the entire #OUA go out to Francis’ family and friends, the Gee-Gees, and the university community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Waterloo Warriors then wrote, “Please know the entire Warriors family is thinking about Francis’ family, friends and teammates during this difficult time. Our sincere condolences.”

Laurier Golden Hawks then added, “The entire Golden Hawk family extends our sincerest condolences to the Francis’ family, friends and teammates during this difficult time. You are in our thoughts.”
