It’s not a proper race day at Talladega without a few wrecks, and the GEICO 500 has more than delivered, with Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. the cause of one major bang-up.
Between Joey Logano going airborne and flipping several times to Kurt Busch’s tires catching on fire, it’s been hectic. It almost always is at Talladega Superspeedway.
And after a couple of eye-catching wrecks that involved Denny Hamlin, he and Martin Truex Jr. got in on the “fun.” That may not be the right word, but it certainly makes for good entertainment.
On the 119th lap of the GEICO 500, drivers were fairly tight and three-wide. As they adjusted speeds in the close-quarters moment, Truex Jr. appears to clip Denny Hamlin just enough, and it leads to chaos. Watch below.
“Watch as @MartinTruexJr and @dennyhamlin come together leading to this multi-car accident on Lap 119,” NASCAR tweeted.
Hamlin crashes against the wall, but actually isn’t spun out. Meanwhile, Truex Jr. attempts to slow down as Hamlin connects, but William Byron can’t slow down with him, and clips him and it inevitably leads to the wall.
That contact further sent Byron out of control, sending him down into Alex Bowman in the No. 48 car. Bowman and his crew were unable to get the car repaired in time. However, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and William Byron all were able to continue.
NASCAR Fans Slam Denny Hamlin
Many fans were, unsurprisingly, angry at the wreck. While there was debate over who’s fault it was, a large portion of the NASCAR Twitter crowd pointed their fingers at Denny Hamlin.
“How many wrecks will Denny Hamlin have to cause before these Denny-worshipping commentators will call a spade a spade and admit that the dude can’t drive for s–t? #nascarxfox #nascarfoxsports” wrote @BenTeal2011.
Hamlin’s style and off-track personality earns him a lot of fans, and a lot of detractors too. Another example is user @ShaneHamiltonLV, who doesn’t hold back his feelings on the driver.
“@dennyhamlin is total asshole. Caused that wreck and your a lap down. #Dumbass”
And to put a cap on it, user @brown48maryj guessed the lengths Denny Hamlin would go to win.
“@dennyhamlin would crash his mama to win.”
