Following a 45-21 loss to the Houston Texans on Thanksgiving day, the Detroit Lions elected to fire Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn. Patricia held the position of Head Coach for the past three seasons, posting a record of 13-29-1. Bob Quinn held the role of the General Manager in Detroit since the 2016 season. This year, the Lions are in last the NFC North with a 4-7 record and have all but been eliminated from the playoff race.

For woeful Lions fans, this news comes as a relief and a chance for hope in the future. Many fans voiced their happiness on Twitter following the breaking news.

Some folks didn’t hold back on letting Detroit know how they felt. Even former Loins running back and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush weighed in on the decision.

Matthew Stafford

The “generational quarterback” referenced above is Matthew Stafford, the first pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. Stafford played college football at the University of Georgia along with NFL stars A J Green and Knowshon Moreno. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions after their 0-16 season and has been the starting quarterback for them ever since. in 2017, Stafford signed a five-year, $135 million contract extension, which made him the highest-paid quarterback at the time.

The Detroit Lions Woes of the New Millennium

Since legendary running back Barry Sanders retired after the 1998 season, the Detroit Lions have only achieved five winning seasons. They also have not advanced past the wildcard round of the playoffs since 1991. Despite having a good drafting position most years, the Lions have consistently failed to capitalize. While recent history seems to show little hope for Lions fans, perhaps a new head coach and general manager can bring success back to the struggling franchise.
