Fan Favorite Chase Elliott Wins NASCAR Cup Series Title, Twitter Sounds Off

On Sunday, Chase Elliott won the NASCAR Cup Series title at Phoenix Raceway. And after he did, Twitter lit up with replies.

“CHECKERED FLAG,” tweeted @NASCAR. “@Chaseelliott wins at @phoenixraceway and captures the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series title!”

The tweet drew 1.4K retweets, 4.6K likes and 405 quote tweets. And NASCAR’s replies quickly blew up.

On Twitter, Fans Chime In

Some tweeps cheered Elliott’s win. “Congratulations, Chase!!” tweeted Twitter user Inigo Sim.

Others sounded off on the quality of the track. One person called the track “awful.” Another said the track was “horrible for the finale.”

“Nothing bad to say about any of the drivers, respect to Chase for winning his way when it mattered most but… Phoenix is an absolutely ABYSMAL track for a championship,” replied Twitter user @Skyman_30. “Just follow the leader with basically 1 competitive groove there was literally like 5 lead changes smh.”

Several tweeps alleged the championship was rigged because their favored drivers did not win. Then they threatened to go elsewhere, perhaps tongue in cheek.

“I’ve been a NASCAR fan for 12 months but this is the final straw!” Twitter user Ryan tweeted. “NASCAR is rigged and the Championship was STOLEN from Jimmie Johnson. My kids are so upset about it and won’t stop crying! I will be taking my racing interests to F1, where every driver gets a fair shot to win!”

Elliott Wins Despite Setback

Disappointed fans aside, ESPN has called Elliott “NASCAR’s most popular driver.” On Sunday he also became the third-youngest NASCAR champion ever.

Elliott started the race at the rear because he failed the prerace inspection. However, he fought his way to the front of traffic and then secured the championship.

Before the race, Elliott had shared some advice he got from his dad, NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, who won the Cup title in 1988.

“The big thing from talking to dad that I feel like he’s kind of mentioned is just enjoy these moments because these aren’t things you can take for granted,” Elliott said. “You don’t know when your last race win is, you don’t know what tomorrow brings.”

Whatever tomorrow brings for Elliott, today has brought a Cup title like his dad’s, and he’s got to be pretty happy about that.
