This week, President Donald Trump will award New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Bill Belichick isn’t the first sports icon Donald Trump has given the medal too. Others include Tiger Woods, Babe Ruth, Roger Staubach, Bob Cousy, Mariano Rivera, Jerry West, Lou Holtz, Gary Player, and Annika Sorenstam.

Bill Belichick’s Friendship with Donald Trump

Donald Trump and Bill Belichick are friends, however. Back in 2016, the NFL coach wrote the Presidential hopeful a letter that Trump read allowed when he won the election.

“Congratulations on a tremendous campaign. You have dealt with an unbelievable slanted and negative media and have come out beautifully – beautifully. You’ve proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter. Your leadership is amazing. I have always had tremendous respect for you, but the toughness and perseverance you have displayed over the past year is remarkable. Hopefully, tomorrow’s election results will give the opportunity to make America great again. Best wishes for great results tomorrow. Bill”

The 68-year-old defended his letter to the media, saying that he and Trump are longtime friends and he’s not a “politically motivated” person.

“I’ve received a number of inquiries relative to a note I wrote to Donald on Monday,” Belichick said of the letter when asked by reporters. “Our friendship goes back many years. I think anybody that spends more than five minutes with me knows I’m not a political person. My comments are not politically motivated.”

He also adds, “To me, friendship and loyalty is just about that, it’s not about political or religious views. I write hundreds of letters and notes every month. Doesn’t mean I agree with every single thing that every person thinks about politics or religion or other subjects.”

It is still unclear if Bill Belichick will be getting the award in person as the Patriots did not respond to comments on the matter.
