Earlier this week, FOX Sports announcer Joe Buck spoke out about having a tequila drink while in the broadcast booth. Following unwarranted criticism, Buck is now setting the record straight with a series of Twitter posts.
On Wednesday night, the longtime sports announcer defended himself against the recent backlash. He shared that he used to have a large beer in the booth with him, and that later transitioned to a tequila drink. Yet he never mentioned drinking them in their entirety, nor did he say he drank multiple per game.
Buck said he felt compelled to address what he called a “dumb drinking in the booth story that is complete clickbait.” He tweeted 10 times explaining the anecdote he shared with Colin Cowherd on his podcast and tried to set the record straight.
The announcer said that his employers, FOX Sports, have not mentioned the controversy to him at all. Buck said FOX executives trust him and know how dedicated he and his broadcast partner Troy Aikman are to their jobs. He calls himself an open book – sometimes to a fault – and doesn’t regret sharing the story. However, Buck does regret mentioning his co-anchor. He called Aikman one of his best friends and said nobody has more integrity or works harder than the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.
Furthermore, Buck went on to explain his exact routine with the alcoholic beverages. The drinks were not in the booth for consumption. Instead, they served as more of a visual reminder to “be loose” and to “have fun.” He acknowledges that he sometimes took a sip here and there, but never overindulged. The announcer said it’s been four years since he had a drink in the broadcast booth, but admits it may not be the last time either.
Joe Buck Talks About Drinking Tequila in Broadcast Booth
Joe Buck got into some hot water this week for his tequila drinking story he shared with Colin Cowherd on his new podcast network The Volume.
The podcast host mentioned Buck and Aikman’s chemistry on-air while calling games. He compared the duo to two good friends watching a game while enjoying a glass of bourbon. That’s when Buck corrected him by saying it’s not bourbon in the booth, but a tequila drink instead.
“We have had that glass of bourbon in the booth. Although it’s not bourbon, it’s tequila, splash of Grand Marnier and grapefruit juice,” Buck responded to Cowherd. “I went through a couple years where in the first inning of every postseason baseball game, I had the runner go get the biggest beer that the stadium sold. And I had it sitting there, and I would sip it from time to time to remind myself to relax and have fun. I’m just doing a game.”
Buck said he began the tradition with beer before bringing the idea over to FOX football games. He then credited Aikman for the transition to tequila. The broadcaster said the drink helped him relax when feeling anxious in the broadcast booth.
“And I brought that over to football,” Buck continued. “But because Troy is a man of finer tastes, beer somehow became tequila, Grand Marnier and grapefruit juice. We haven’t done it in a long time now, but it was good for a stretch. I feel like it’s a good mental trigger to just chill and remind yourself that you’re not refueling a F-16 in mid-flight. You’re doing a sporting event, and if you treat it like anything other than that you’re doing yourself a disservice.”
