He was the king of Queens, he was a mall cop, and now… he’s going to be the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. That’s right. Kevin James himself will tackle the Sean Payton role in “Home Team,” a movie based on the NFL’s notorious “Bountygate.”
But it doesn’t look like the comedic actor is attempting to make a crossover into dark, dramatic territory. The upcoming movie is being produced by Happy Madison Productions, the Adam Sandler run company named for its funny classics, “Happy Gilmore” and “Billy Madison.”
So expect a more comedic approach to the events surrounding the Saints’ bounty scandal. A scandal that saw New Orleans Saints players paid bonuses for injuring opposing team’s players during games from 2009-2011.
Apparently, the movie will focus more on the time Sean Payton spent away from the NFL during his one-year suspension. The accomplished coach hung up his headset to call plays for his son’s 6th-grade football team through the 2012 season.
The New Orleans Saints and their division rival Atlanta Falcons have had some fun with the news, going back and forth on Twitter.
Sean Payton Is Involved In The Kevin James Led Movie
Peter King of NBC Sports reports that Sean Payton himself has gone over the script and has made his own contributions.
Payton came right back to the NFL after his suspension and has kept his nose clean ever since. But the Bountygate incident is still a sore point for many around the league.
The NFL investigated the Saints head coach back in 2010. The league found that Payton was fully aware of his players being rewarded for injuring opponents, resulting in his 2012 suspension.
The bounty program was reportedly put in place by then-defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Williams and a handful of Saints players received suspensions as well.
The bounty system created an environment where players themselves offered money to each other for knocking opponents out of games. For example, Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma put up $10,000 for whoever took opposing quarterback Brett Favre out of the NFC Championship game.
Some people fear that the movie will make Sean Payton out to be a good guy. A reasonable concern given his involvement in the script.
We’ll just have to wait and see how Kevin James and Happy Madison decide to play it. “Home Team” is set to start filming later this year.
